I started a new job last December and have been getting emergency taxed since. I was out of work since December 2014 before that so I dont think a P45 will do, I was on the dole from january 2015 to december 2015, so how do I stop myself being emergency taxed and claim back the extra tax they have taken so far? thanks

Get your certificate of tax credits for this year. Get your P21 for last year. Emergency tax gone and probably a nice cheque in the post for you.

Contact the revenue and get them to issue you with a P45, you should receive the emergency tax the next month but this will be taxed at the higher rate. You can claw back the additional tax charged by submitting a tax return at the end of the year.

    This is incorrect.

OP, get your Employer's registration number from payroll and call Revenue with your PPS number and start date. Get them to issue a Tax Credit Certificate on a cumulative basis to your employer. This will sort out your tax for 2016. You will not be charged the higher rate of tax on any refund due as it is a refund of tax and is not treated as pay. You should get any refund due to you in a couple of weeks, you do not have to wait until the end of the year.

As for 2015, your employer should be issuing you with a P60 this month. Once your employment is set up with Revenue over the phone, you can then go online and input your pay, tax and USC details and request a P21 for 2015. This will refund any tax and/or USC you are due back. You can also input your bank details so the refund will go directly to your account, otherwise a cheque will be issued.

What Valentina said. I was working a summer job for college and got a nice tidy sum back. Emergency tax is load of s***.

Valentina is correct. Revenue are very efficient and issue tax allowance cert and refunds very speedily once you submit the necessary information to them.
