I had my car (08 VW Golf, diesel) serviced before Christmas and the mechanic told me that one of the front shocks needed to be replaced but he'd have to replace both of them at the same time. He quoted €300 to get it done. Does this sound about right?

Yes, you should replace them in pairs.

Depending on what brand shocks they are they can be anything from 50 to 100 per shock, then add an hour labour (even if it tales less to change both).

Thanks Biko. So that sounds about right then. Is it ok to drive it for another while until I get money together or could it do more damage?

It should be fine to drive but take it handy over speed ramps etc.
Ring other mechanics and get quotes.
Also ask what brand shocks they intend to put it. Google brand to see what it's like.

i wouldnt say it would do more damage but it could affect the handling of the car. If you were to have an accident, it might not look good to an insurance company driving around with a known bad shock
