Just noticed yesterday that Aldi do prepacked sambos for €1.29 which is a lot cheaper than the €3-4 that other supermarkets and convenience stores charge for the same thing.

Selections include chicken and bacon, chicken and stuffing, tuna and sweetcorn, egg and cress and BLT.

I've seen these in stores for ages. Good value.

Dealz have sambos for 1.49, tried some last week, they taste like it! What are these like?

All brands of premade sandwiches are inedible imo, why do they get so soggy in the box? Its like they've been dipped in water.

Probably were chilled for sometime and got added mositure that way.

good price, but i too find any pre packed sandwiches that have been in a fridge for any length of time poor enough.

Different story for ones that are freshly made in the shop each morning, and are purchased that day. The bread does seem very soggy

The aldi ones used to be 99cent before the recession

Yep, and the company that made them went bust trying to supply them. Doolittles, Laghey, Co. Donegal

    Sometimes cheap is counterproductive.

The aldi sandwiches are not that bad ,I had one last week and the only problem was it was a little dry , most stuff in aldi is of a very high quality and a hell of a lot cheaper than most of the other supermarket's.

Ya you're right, the dealz ones aren't great at all. The Aldi ones are much better, as good quality as the vast majority of pre packed sandwiches and they are not scabby with the fillings either. Manys the lunchtime they got me out of a jam!

You're way off about Aldi. Their fruit and veg is easily better than most supermarkets. Cheap too.

That article dates to 2009, there has been other suppliers of 99cent sambos since then and it looks like that company based in Donegal might not have been able for the increase in wage costs as well as added transport costs from being so far from their main markets.

These are about the right price for sandwiches and perfectly edible. Better than the vastly overpriced ones supermarkets have.

For €1.29 you can't go far wrong. The main supermarkets charge €3 for basically the same thing. Also I've noticed that since Xmas Freshway sandwiches are very scabby on the fillings. I haven't come across that with Aldi sandwiches yet, the filling isn't exactly bursting out of them but its not lacking either and as you say €1.29 is a good price

Freshways management did a buy out from Kerry Foods and things have been tough for them since. They lost a huge contract with Boots and are struggling. I hope they do well.

Generally dont like aldi's food. Granted i haven't tried a huge range but anything i have had ive found to be far too sweet. Pasta sauces and juices mainly. Don't like their tea bags either (that could be cause the mother in law might be spitting in it though tbf).

These sambos are great value though. Ive had the cheese and onion a couple of times and it certainly filled the gap.

Tbf a decent sambo for 1.49 is a bargain in my eyes. Go to dunnes and pay 3.50 for a prepack, restore for 4.25.

As for the actual ingrediant quality i don't know, but taste test says its grand.

Best value for money by far is Tesco meal deal sambos/wraps/salads for €3.49

When you consider a Kitkat and a can of Coke on their own would cost ~ €2, youre more or less paying the same as Aldi, but better selection and taste.

Very apt username for someone who makes such healthy choices for their lunch every day :)

There must be some law requiring Aldis to at least put a best before date on there fruit and veg. And no its appalling the punnet of semi soft brown strawberries i bought can attest to that. And after 1 night they had a grey furry coat over everyone. Aldis is nothing more than a notch above a pound store in everything it sells ie Rubbish.

Tesco's are fine if you want to have a can & chocolate with your sambo. Otherwise Aldi by far the best on price.

While they may (or may not) be a bargain alert, people usually grab a prepacked sandwich on their lunch break from a convenience store when they are short on time. Many Aldi's are on the outskirts of town and usually have one checkout open with a large queue - not really somewhere that you nip in to grab a quick lunch.

But some aren't. Some are central enough and loads of people work/live/pass an Aldi every day around lunch time.

The bargain alert isn't for everyone but you can bet some people don't know Aldi did cheap sandwiches so hopefully this alert was of use to them

You sound like a remnant of the Celtic Tiger! Aldi are fine. Never had an issue like that with any of their fruit & veg.

There is a bb date on them but it's not done the "normal" way. It will have a day/week so Tuesday 10 January would be 02/02 or something similar. Bit confusing alright.

I go to deals twice a week to get my wraps for lunches. Its a no brainer. However I think they shouldn't order as many chili chicken wraps in. There always seem to be shelfful where I have to dig in at the back to get the nicer ones.

ah right, that might explain why the bread seemed to get smaller and the fillings a bit scabby at times
    johnf26 wrote: »

Well I'm not sure where else you can get a prepacked sambo for €1.29. Dealz is €1.49 and then all the main supermarkets tend to charge €3 to €4. Aldi at €1.29 is about 60% cheaper than Tesco, Dunnes, Super Value and all the convenience stores like Spar, Centra, Mace, etc. They might be the same price all the time but a lot of people might not have known that Aldi did sandwiches, I certainly didn't till I spotted them on a shelf yesterday which is why I started this thread- to alert others of savings to be had vs..the main supermarkets. So hopefully it is of use to some people here.

Dunnes do a €3.50 offer at the moment, packaged Sambo, drink and coke... Probably not much difference in the offerings there... Think Tesco had the same thing for €3 for a while!

Eat Aldi sandwiches and succeed in life. That's the maxim everyone should live by!

I hope you put some of those 'magic' Aldi strawberries you have beside some of 'The homeless'. It's cold these nights.

There is a date code which is the week number and the day of the week. (4105) would be week 41 and day 5 so Friday of week 41.

Aldi sandwiches are decent.... But the ones in Dealz are surpising very good.
They are made by Pallas Foods in Finglas if I am not mistaken.

Do Lidl do them too :)

Havent seen them in Lidl despite searching for them

Aldi also do a large bottle of water for 59c which they keep beside the sambos, so you can have a sambo and water for less then €2
