Too early a start any way

They are just saying it's been postponed until a date later in the season. Unless someone around here is in the know, it could be something innocuous such as roadworks (which caused the cancellation of an early season race in Ulster last season for example)

    Just this
Due to unforseen circumstances the Ned Flanagan race for Sunday the 14th of February has being postponed to a later date in the season. Apologies for any inconvenience and the new date will be posted asap

Stickybottle seems to be unaware that there is another race scheduled in Loughrea for the 14th, so the start of the season is not 'postponed' as per their headline (just yet anyway).

Might mean bigger numbers for Loughrea?

That has traditionally being a nice race to start (for softer riders) as a lot of the bigger boys have been doing the Lacey cup and Leinster opener. Suspect that may not be the case this year as it has the calendar to itself...

This event is also off due to weather

Looks like the shouting for a later start (which I agree with) has inadvertently happened this year. I know there are 2 races on the 21st but it is the weekend of the 27th/28th where it kicks off in earnest with a good choice.

This is nearly March so not quite so bad.

Maybe some might get the message now.
Far too early in this country for road racing.2 weeks later is plenty early enough. This is cold, damp miserable,February in Ireland and not Qatar.
Delighted that they are both off as a black ice type of day in either race could be dissasterous.

I can understand your point. On the other hand its not like the weather this weekend is unusual for Feb - Sunday is forecast cold and dry. Why were these races cancelled so late in the day?

I have no idea why either event has been cancelled, but my point was irrespective of the reason,i am glad they are not happening. The one in Kildare has been blessed and lucky with weather in the past few yrs,but on a less favourable day it mightn't be as good.Loop contains a descent that has a cattle grid.
We need to change the thinking of promoters and riders.Somehow we have to find a way to make racing in late August and September cool and fashionable again.I can fully understand promoters reluctant to run races at that time of year as the field sizes [and revenue] drops off,but if we can come up with something meaningful and real, they just might keep racing for a month longer.Something like a shared series over all the Saturdays in September with shared promoters and a descent prize fund might be a start.

Disagree about the weather and early races. Traders Cup last year is one if my most memorable races because of the weather. One person's opinion, I know, but I am not happy to see either race cancelled.

The rain in March and April causes as much chaos with road surfaces, Boyne GP and the corner by Slane Castle gates springs to mind. Not criticising the race itself or organisers. I just see that conditions are tough into late Spring so I think the early races should stay as they are, if we want to race them we should be allowed to.

I mean, we race Mondello knowing that there's oil onthe track from the previous weekend?

there are certainly strong arguments in favour of starting the season later. However there are also good reasons why people don't want to race in September. School/college starting and various other reasons

However, cancelling a race two days before it on account of the weather when the weather forecast is pretty much standard for the time of year (in fact it looks pretty good right now) seems a bit odd - at least to me

I suspect that when a race is cancelled organisers will use the most convenient excuse. It actually may be the forecast in this case or it may not, we probably won't find out.

My own club revived and ran Ras Chlar for a couple of years and then cancelled it the 3rd year citing probable lack of interest due to it being on the same day that the Giro was coming to Dublin.

Real reason was that there was a tiny racing base in the club (which wasn't competitive) and the club which was primarily a sportive club started wondering why they were running the race. One committee member was keen and liked the kudos that goes with putting on a good race. At the end of the day however it needs a big effort from several members and others had enough after doing it for 2 years. Especially when it didn't fit the direction the club was heading in.

Now you're not going to try and explain all this, the Giro was far easier.

With both Loughrea and Ned Flanagan lets see if they run later in the year. This will tell its own story... ras chlar was never going to be rescheduled for another date.

I would suspect weather wasn't a factor. Weather was never promised bad for this weekend. Cancelled races rarely get stuck back into the calendar.
