Sick Days

Hi all, have a query re. sick days.

I work for an American company, in Dublin. We don't get any sick days; as in, if I were to call in sick, it's taken as a personal/holiday day. Unfortunately, this only encourages us all to come in while sick, so bugs/colds tend to spread like wildfire around the place.

I'm just wondering if this is actually all above board? I've never encountered it before, but perhaps it's just the nature of the company.

    Thanks in advance!

If you are sick 6 days or more you get payments off welfare.

You need doctor to sign forms and send to welfare office.

They must adhere to employment laws in Ireland and give you at least those rights as a minimum. The fact that they are originally an American company makes no difference. I don't think sick pay is mandatory however, but you can choose to take an unpaid sick day and claim from social welfare as far as I know. Check citizens information website it's usually pretty good

I know about the 6+ days thing, I was more talking about the one/two days when you have a stomach bug or a head cold. Surely it makes sense to allow 2-3 per annum for sick days and to help prevent the entire office being struck down? :D

Employers are not required to pay sick leave unless otherwise stated in your contract. You say it encourages people to come to work when sick, if they were paid it may encourage them to stay at home when they are not. You can choose to not get paid while out or to get paid and designate it as an annual leave day.

No sick days paid in my company but they are not taken from your holidays, you just aren't paid for the days taken off - i would have thought that was the norm to be honest!

    It is.

They cannot force you to use annual leave days for sickness.

Some companies choose to offer you the option of using annual leave, while others forbid it and say you have to go unpaid.

As the op says, it's crazy. But it's the law. Of you don't like it, then mention it to any election candidates you happen to meet.
