I'm gonna be a maid of honour for a friend and was wondering if anybody could suggest any if those wedding fairs or anything? These type of things seem like they'll be right up her street and I thought it might be nice to take her to one abd then for a nice dinner somewhere.

Or would you guys, most of you being brides or soon to be brides, prefer something like a spa day and lunch with some wedding magazines?

Any other suggestions are welcome too :)

I know there's usually a few wedding fairs in the RDS during the year, and they're big events. Personally when I went to them, I found them fun, but not hugely beneficial in terms of planning, if you get what I mean. Although what I did find handy was getting lots of brochures etc to bring home and look over in a more relaxed environment.

Some hotels have wedding fairs there, so if she's got her eye on any venues, see have they got one coming up - usually there's a lot of them in Feb/March. They usually have the function room done up as though for a wedding, and there'll be various suppliers there. I booked my DJ, wedding car and cake through suppliers I saw at the wedding fair in the hotel. (I got married in the Glenview in case it's any use, their wedding open days are usually very good)

There's a wedding fair on in the Crowne Plaza on February 21st in Dundalk. Only an hour up the M1, nice hotel too.

Heres a tip that Toots touched on it, as a supplier myself, if you go to a fair in the hotel where youre having the wedding, the suppliers may be more flexible on a discount due to locale.

The RDS and citywest fairs are set in the calendar every year and are a different beast to the local hotel fairs, the stalls are very expensive, but you then see the big suppliers at them as they have bigger advertising budgets but does lead to less discounts.

I'm not into traditions or wedding etiquette etc.. But i did go to a local wedding fair last week & Peter from weddings by Franc gave a talk with tips etc.. I got my make up done, tried cakes, saw the flowers i want etc so maybe if you know Franc will be at one it could be a laugh. Having said that i would always choose a spa day :-)
lucky bride to have such a thoughtful bridesmaid.

I always get so excited when Lau2976 posts. I wish I was your friend. :o

You should try some of the smaller wedding fairs... Spectacular vintage etc. I think some of the big ones can be a bit cattle mart-ish and if it's something you want to enjoy in a relaxed atmosphere you may end up hating all things wedding after a day of pushing through crowds etc. I agree the Hotel specific ones are really nice and you could always have a nice lunch or dinner in the hotel afterwards or even stay the night?

Anglers Rest, Castleknock and Royal Marine Hotel all have fairs coming up so check those out maybe?
