Can You Recharge Electric Fence Batteries?

Have a portable Gallagher fencer for putting wire up around the odd thing, bales etc. A bit peeved though that I have to spend 30 quid every time I need a new battery though. Are these batteries rechargeable? Or can you get a specific battery that will recharge?

No not usually rechargable...

First thing is the quality of the fence will set the battery life, a fence with good quality insulators and no earthings will give superior fence life as the battery isnt wasting any power. Every earth point sucks the life out of the battery..

Our portable fencer will take 9-12v battery, we just gunthered a fix to use a small car battery, take it in and recharge overnight when required but best not let it get fully flat either as regular lead acid batteries don't like full cycling. I could easily rig a solar panel to the fence but we only use it occasionally and get maybe 8 weeks from a charge anyway.. Run it high for 2-3 days and then turn down to low.

What model is it? I have a Gallagher B50 fencer and I run it off an old Tractor 12V battery. Those other batteries would rob ya!!
I recharge mine every 2 weeks or so as they draw very little power anyway. Have been doing this for years now.

Get a solar panel and you wont have to charge it at all.

I got a 30w panel for 50euro and only had to charge battery one in 12 months that was in January and battery wasn't dead just low

Some of them work off moonlight too. Well worth it.

Yes, 12v rechargeable is fine. see page 7 above

did you just join/splice the black /red wires of the B50 and bull dog clips to car battery in box or how did you do it?!

I made up new leads with crocodile clips for mine. No harm keep them about 6 feet long as you'll need to keep the battery well back from the fence. You don't want cattle getting near the lead in the battery.
If you cut off the wires from the old Gallagher battery, just splice splice/connect them to the new leads. It will save you having to source the correct connectors. I used a small round file then a ut a slot on the top edge of the lower plastic box to run the wires into the fencer. It will pinch the wires otherwise. You can get a good cheap car battery from a car dismantlers too. One from a crashed car.
