I am trading in my car using Fords scrappage offer. The tax on my car expired at the end of December. Does it have to be up to date or does the dealer care since its scrappage?

Tax doesn't have to be valid for the deal afaik.

The dealer takes ownership. Any outstanding MOTOR tax is wiped clear.

If they're getting a new car sale I suspect they may not care so much. If you've already done the deal then they've seen the car.

Terms and conditions for Focus for example (bottom of http://www.ford.ie/Cars/Focus/Promotions) says
This offer applies to trade-in vehicles aged up to 10 years which are taxed and insured at time of trade-in. Qualifying vehicles must also have a valid NCT certificate at time of trade in.

but I would proceed with the dealer on the basis that it's up to them to tell you what the conditions are i.e. don't let this put you off.
