Claiming Jobseekers/Back to Education Allowance - Mature Student

    Hi guys

My girlfriend is in a full time undergraduate degree, she's in 2nd year and currently 25 years old. She works 2 days a week part time at weekends and studies full time during the week.

Basically she's falling behind due to the nature of her course requiring weekend attendance to seminars and workshop (she's studying games developments) and she can't attend these due to work.

If she was to give up these 2 days (she earns about 120 quid a week in total, and when she subtracts travel and lunches its 100 quid making it barely worthwhile) and quit her job, is she entitled to claim for jobseekers allowance or BTEA?

As far as I was aware you had to be on Jobseekers to claim BTEA. She was living with her grandparents but now lives with me so I'm guessing I'd be means tested which I understand but she can't justify the 2 days any longer considering how important her course is to her and I'm just wondering what are her options?

    Thanks! :)

In order to claim Jobseekers she has to be looking for and available for full time work
As your girlfriend friend is a full time student then she doesn't meet any of these requirements so she cannot get Jobseekers Allowance
BTEA is for Jobseekers claimants of at least 9 months standing who decide to start a course of education, so not qualified for that either

She gets the SUSI grant once a month (263 euro I think) - is that all she's entitled to claim?

For what its worth theres a lot of people in her class who get Job Seekers - this can't be right, right?

If she's a mature student then there would be a lot of people on BTEA which means they were on Jobseekers before they started the course, and got to keep it by switching to BTEA
The SUSI grant and BTEA are the only sources of state support for students
