Cassette/chain compatability

Looking for a quick bit of advice. Have a 10 speed groupset but just got a loan of a turbo with a 9 speed cassette on it. Can I just swap out the wheel and use my 10 speed chain/shifters etc with the 9 speed cassette? Or do I need to buy a new cassette for the turbo wheel?

    Cheers

If you google your query and add the name Leonard Zinn, you'll probably find the answer. As far as I know (and from what I can remember from reading Zinn's posts), a ten-speed chain on a nine-speed cassette should work (though shifting will not be outstanding), especially if it's just for the trainer.

    You need a new cassette.

9 speed cassette and 10 speed shifters will work, but not perfectly.
A friend (I use the word advisedly) of mine had this set up on his turbo for ages, he didn't realise it, until I noticed it and pointed it out to him, But he is a triathloner, so he can be excused.
With a bit of trimming, you can get reasonable gear changing, but then when you switch back to your 10 speed wheel, you'll have to trim your gears again.
I reckon your best bet is to buy something like this.

Yeah I was looking at that one on CR alright. Seems a great price, i'll probably just go with that and stop mucking about trying to make an imperfect system work.
