Sorry if this is in the wrong place... Im looking to speak with someone about a plot my dad said he had years ago in his old parish. ( he has since dies and we could like to bury his ashes in the plot ) however we cant seem to talk with the right person. The priest said he didn't know ( I think he is new ) and the undertakers didn't.... so I guess Im asking who usually runs graveyards? is it the council ?

    thanks :)

I think it depends on the graveyard. There should be a record somewhere and if the priest doesn't know (his being new should have nothing to do with it) check with the local council and see do they have records.

Edit, though come to think of it, either the Priest or the undertakers should have been able to say - oh 'this place' has the records, try there.

Yes most that are still active would be local councils, those which are not would possibly be the parish responbility.

Just looked at citizens information OP and they say that the local authority manages them and most have a registrar in place. He or she would be the right person to contact. All burials are registered with the local authority.

Here is a link to the information.

It is VERY poorly worded and misleading. It does indeed say that they are managed by a local authority. But then it correctly goes on to say that parishes and local groups also have cemeteries.
The actual position is that there are
    - Cemeteries owned or maintained by local authorities
    - Cemeteries owned and maintained by the Catholic Church, the CofI, and other religious bodies, such as the Society of Friends, etc.
    - Cemeteries owned by corporations or groups, such as the Glasnevin Trust.
