When I am driving about 110-120 km on the motorway sometimes the indicator to go down a gear comes up on my dash. I'm in 5th gear at this time.

Any idea why this would be>

If you are moving the accelerator asking for more acceleration than the car can manage in that gear, the better systems will tell you to drop a year as that is the only way the car can do what you are asking with your foot.
If cruising, it should be advising a gear than gives max efficiency.

I never thought I should be in 4th gear when doing 110km?

Drove a Renault Master with this feature. Little bit annoying as I don't think it was too smart; the van had a lot of custom coachwork done to it and it weighed over 3 ton unladen. It would want you to change up at a point where it would be laboring if I had done.

does it happen when trying to climb a hill or accelerate?

Just when I am driving along on the motorway. No incline. Possibly sometimes when I am accelerating.

Well next time you are driving, get to a cruise at whatever is your usual speed in top gear then press accelerator hard. Dash will request to change down. It makes perfect sense. The car had more ability to accelerate in lower gears. It will make more noise and burn more fuel but it will pick up speed faster.

    Will do! Thanks for that

Last car was a semi automatic. Wish I never gave it up!

You're not seeing a reading for decreased fuel consumption by any chance?

I was driving a new Fiesta (i think, could have been a little hyundai either) for a few days last year and would have arrows appearing on the console for both gear changes and mpg changes, if I recall correctly.
