family of 6 (kids 12, 10, 8 and 6) - we're holiday novices as we've never been on a foreign hol before so any advice or info would be greatly appreciated

we've been thinking of southern Germany? Thinking of flying into Memmingen and taking in Legoland but not sure whether to base out of Munich or go further south towards Garmish Partinkirken or over towards Lake Konstanz.

camping in France / Italy could be another option

and to answer the obvious question, our budget is tight

If your car will hold 6+luggage, a ferry to France might be an option. Take it from there.

I highly recommend Bavaria/Southern Germany. It was by far the best holiday we've had! We spent most of our time in Munich.

I wouldn't hire a car. The train network is very extensive, easy to use and is good value. The Bavaria Ticket is the best option for train travel in the region. It allows unlimited travel on regional trains (including suburban trains, trams and buses). It costs €23 and €5 per person thereafter. Children up to 14 travel free when accompanied by a parent. You can buy it here but it is not necessary to purchase it in advance: http://www.bahn.com/i/view/USA/en/prices/germany-regional/bavaria-ticket.shtml
We stayed in Munich and found it an ideal base for day trips. However, accommodation there is not cheap so if your budget is tight staying somewhere like Garmisch might be a good idea. There are some reasonable apartments in Munich on Airbnb or the likes.

    Places/attractions that may interest you:
    • A must see is Neuschwanstein Castle, probably the most famous castle in the world.
    • Berchtesgaden and Salzburg are certainly worth visiting and are easy day trips from Munich with the Bavaria Ticket.
    • Rothenburg ob der Tauber
    • Nuremberg
    • Zugspitze, Germany's highest mountain (there's a cable car up!)
    • Linderhof Palace
    • Herrenchiemsee Palace
    • Legoland
    • Playmobil Fun Park
    • Deutsches Museum (Munich)
    • Nymphenburg Palace (Munich)
    • Residenz Palace (Munich)
    • BMW Exhibition/Museum (Munich)
    • Tierpark Hellabrunn (Zoo - Munich)
    • English Garden (Munich)
    • Eagle's Nest (Hitler's mountain retreat - Berchtesgaden)
    • Lindau/Lake Konstanz
    • Mittenwald
    • Oberammergau

Aer Lingus and Lufthansa fly to Munich Airport.
Memmingen Airport to Munich is a anywhere between 1.5 hours to 2.5 hours on trains/buses (varying duration is due to available connections at time of day). Deutsche Bahn journey planner: http://reiseauskunft.bahn.de/bin/query.exe/en

To see the most either staying in Munich and doing day trips from there or moving around various towns such as Garmisch-Partenkirchen, Füssen, Berchtesgaden, Rothenburg ob der Tauber etc. would be the best ideas.

If you have any questions feel free to ask!
