    Hi All,

Tri795 Carlow race entry is now open. This is a National Series event and will take place on Sunday May 22nd 2016. Entry is €50 (relay €70).

A couple of changes to note from last year (subject to final approvals):
    • swim route is slightly different this year, the upstream part of the swim will be shorter that that planned last year
    • the run route is a complete change from last year and will follow the river path for the most part, keeping away as much as possible from roads and footpaths

The bike route is much the same as last year.

Routes are available at the link above.

I really enjoyed it last year, so well organised for the first time the event was held.

I hear there are less than 100 places left !

Word on the street is this is likely to be a duathlon unless we get a prolonged period of water-temperature-upness...

    How does that effect NS?

I'd say we will be ok though. Won't get w chance for Ow before the day so will be some shock for me. Although saying that I do hope it's a good swin

I was in the Irish sea on Sunday. Temperature was fine, certainly wouldn't see a problem with a 750m swim. We were in about 10 mins (500mish).

NS points will still be determined by finish placings.

It will would be some shock for a lot of people who will also have it as first OW swim of the year.

Ah surely lightening can't strike twice lkke last year after the last minute messing with the swim course to cater to people who can't swim upstream in the cold!

As it should have been last year, still don't understand how they got away with it!!!

It is the first open water race of the season. If you are not comfortable swimming in cold water - do not enter an early season open water race. I'm sorry, but, it's a sprint. 750m. You won't be in the water that long, providing the air temperature isn't minus 5 I don't see why it would be cancelled. Even I'd be out of the water in 15 minutes and I'm a sh*t swimmer.

No one is a sh*t swimmer, everyone will have signed the swim proficiency declaration that they have swam at least 500m OW within the past 30 days.

    Safety first!

You must tell me where this street is and I'll inform the rest of the race committee to stop planning for a swim - bike - run.

Racing795 club and committee put a lot of work into starting up this new race from scratch last year, closed roads etc, and have worked to make it better this year. A lot easier to not do so (and easier still to hurl from the ditch as I'm doing).

You know I'm not having a go at them or their efforts (and I wouldn't have said anything if the race wasn't oversubscribed).

When would they make a call on that? Can you get a refund if it turns into a Duathlon?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,435 ✭✭✭joey100

I don't think last year the swim as changed because of the cold. I thought it looked alright, I was in the second wave, so when I was waiting on the bank for my wave and seen some of the top swimmers struggle to swim back upstream to the start line after their warm up I think they made the right decision. They even lengthened the swim to try and make up for the flow of the river. I know my time and few of the times of others were pretty much what they would be for a normal sprint. I thought last year they were one of the better races at dealing with the conditions they were given on the day rather than going for the easy option of cancelling the swim.

I was swimming in the Barrow last night and it was grand.

Race Website says that it's all good for Sunday: https://racing795.com/

"Preparations are in place and the weather is playing ball as the temperature in the River Barrow read 13.5 degrees today!"

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,033 ✭✭✭griffin100

TI make the call re. the swim. Last year it was a combination of a strong current and lowish water temp that prompted the swim change to all downstream. The concern was that some swimmers would be in the water for too long swimming against the current and consequently would be too cold when exiting the water. We all have opinions on that call but at the end of the day TI enforce the race rules and if you want to run a TI/NS race you have to obey. It's a risk every OW race this early in the season has to contend with. At least in a river swim you can mess around with the course to try and compensate as was done last year.

Plenty of people have been the river recently with no problems as far as I know, but it's not all about water temperature. There are rules about flow rates, air temperature and the gap between it and water temperature. The water could be balmy but if it's -1 in transition..........

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 1,157 ✭✭✭Kurt_Godel

Ah I just swam the course, it's perfect. Ice cream headache getting in but better than grand once you get going. Not much of a noticeable flow either no shivers getting out.

    I'll let "the street" know...

Just a quick update, I will be on duty at the car park entrance from 7am charging €10 per car plus an extra fee of €2 per bike. This small nominal fee is to cover the costs associated with me having to get out of bed so early on a Sunday morning.

    Swim waves are published https://racing795.com/

Six waves with about 85 in each.

Question regarding the bike route- any thoughts on deep wheels, given the up/down route and farm gates/crosswinds?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,435 ✭✭✭joey100

I'd say go with the deep wheels Kurt, the cross winds aren't too bad on that route, you can see the gates coming up and get ready ;). Apart from the first 2/3km and last 2/3km it's pretty much a straight road. I used 40mm wheels last year and had no problems at all.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 1,157 ✭✭✭Kurt_Godel

Thanks joey. I'll be using C50's at least, but have a new set of 82/101 that I'm considering.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 7,454 ✭✭✭hf4z6sqo7vjngi

What about disc? Its looking for its maiden voyage, have a 60 upfront which is probably more important for handling/crosswinds

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,435 ✭✭✭joey100

I can only talk about last year but I didn't find the crosswinds that bad at all and I wouldn't be the best bike handler in the world. Was only running a 40mm deep front wheel but found it grand. Definitely don't remember the wind being a big issue, and I do from some other races.

Any beginners who are interested, there will be a gang from Tinahely Tri in the Barrow river tonight 19:30-20:00 sharp. I'm giving an intro to wetsuit swimming, acclimatising to cold, sighting, scrums, etc, and have a look at the course. Meet at opposite bank to swim exit point at 19:15. No fee, TI membership required (insurance reasons), and although this is aimed at newbies/beginners, all are welcome.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,033 ✭✭✭griffin100

Was in the river tonight giving my SIL a bit of a confidence booster as she's a nervous first time 750m ow swimmer. Have to say the water was positively balmy, skins swimming can't be too far away, if only the rowers would feck on :)

Seriously though, no ice cream headache, minimal current, can't see this swim being changed unless something major happens with the flow over the next couple of days. Hopefully the weather will play ball for the couple of hours cyclists are on the road on Sunday. If you've a Child of Prague knocking around the house put it out ;)

Is the new run route on a trail or footpaths for the most part?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,466 ✭✭✭Shedite27

There's a video on the site, looks to be bout 75% trail, 25% footpath

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,999 ✭✭✭68 lost souls

    Trail runners or racers so?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,033 ✭✭✭griffin100

You won't need trail runners on the Barrow track, it's a fairly solid surface.

Racers it is thanks. Bags packed and looking forward to it. thankful for a later start than most races.

Yeah the later start is nice.... But not too late like the Athy sprint last year, spend the day just waiting around to go.

With the amount of rain we've had today ye are gonna have a fast swim. Well down stream at least. :D

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,033 ✭✭✭griffin100

We had torrential rain, hailstones and thunder and lightning whilst setting up transition; all interspersed between periods of good sunshine (I manged to get sunburnt today). I hope the rack position numbers are waterproof :pac: The roads around the race area were flash flooding when i left this evening but that'll clear.

    Into the river. :D

It was literally 4 seasons in 5 mins sunshine/rain/thunder/lightening/hail stones.

Hopefully it's cleared it's system and the weather plays ball tomorrow.

Well done Racing795, ye put on a great show today. Very well-organised race, held in great conditions.

Water temps and flow were good (it was a real scrum to the turn bouy!), tough uphill bike into a headwind- but I bet some speed records were set on the way down! Nice run route along the Barrow. Lovely atmosphere around the finish area, good to meet several from here today. Hope you all had a good race :)

Just back from doing this. I must say overall it was very well organised, and the weather helped a lot.
The swim - everything ran on time, water was 13.5 degrees and felt fine. I must say there were probably too many in each wave - I couldn't really 'swim' until we turned at the buoy. Small thing and I'm not sure if more waves is a runner for future events.

The cycle - really a game of two halves - first 10k is a complete drag - struggled to average 23k/hr. The way back was the opposite - passed the speed check at 63k/h even on my basic road bike. The guys on the TT were going well above that.

The run - no hassles - fairly flat - mix of on road and trail type surface but it was all grand.

Transition areas, bag drop etc all very well organised.

Just one recommendation - felt the guys doing the race briefing could have been louder - they had started before a lot of people had realised but again that's only a small issue.

Definitely would have this on my calendar for next year.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,033 ✭✭✭griffin100

Will take the smaller waves sugg stood on board if the event runs next year. Was actually the same numbers in the waves this year as last year but i think the upstream swim into the strong current held the packs together for longer leading to congestion.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,999 ✭✭✭68 lost souls

All the prayers to weather gods seem to have worked. A fantastic day racing.

Didn't know what to expect from my form at the moment with various ongoing treatments from my physios but was happy to be out on the run under an hour which I was targeting for today.

Swim has been off this year with shoulder problems and still went sub 13 so was delighted with that.

A few mistakes in transition, including heading out for the run with my helmet on.

Heading out the cycle was tough but fun on the way in although a bit nervous on the road surface so held back at points.

Transition was a bit crowded as someone put their bike in the wrong way or wrong place I couldn't fit my bike on my rack and had to steal someone else's spot which I told a marshal at the time.

All in a great day with lots of positives and a decent start to the season. First dip in ow this year for me and first time running off the bike this year. Will have to practice a lot before lanesboro
