Installing stove in standard foreplace

I am currently renovating a house I bought and wish to put a Stanley type stove into the sitting room for room heat only. I am wondering what is best to do as in does the original fireplace, which is 18 inches wide by 10 inches deep after I took out the original fire backing, need to be opened out to fit a stove in or, would it be best to put the stove in front of the fireplace with the flue attached to the back of the stove and if so, does any special heat resistant plaster board etc need to be installed on the wall behind the stove. This wall is currently normal skimcoat over whatever slabs they put in front of chimneys 40 years ago. I'm also trying to establish should I go with the free standing stove does the hearth need to go all the way to the back of the fireplace or can I place it flush with the wall at the front and close up the cavity with a piece of granite etc.
