    Hello all
Wondering does anyone have an idea of what the average Handicap might be?
    Thanks from Curly Head

Average of what? Club? Country? World? Men? Women? Age group?

Or do you mean distribution? Like 10% 0-5, 20% 5-10 etc.?

I think you'd have to ask the GUI. I'm not sure what use the information is as an average handicap will just give you a number without any background. More useful would be the distribution, so say 50% of GUI golfers have handicaps between 11 and 20 or 75% between 11 and 30 rather than the average being 15.

Just asking as a matter of interest, it came up during a round last week so I said I'd put it out there

US handicapping is a good bit different though. Not sure what the differences are but they have things like 'course rating' and 'slope rating'.

Still my guess of 50% being between 10 and 20 seems accurate enough ;)

Edit: However 35% of US golfers having a handicap of 10 or less and 10% at 5 or less seems a tad high imo.

The average handicap in the CONGU region is much higher than you might expect, afair it's about 18 or 19.

US handicaps are a bit of a joke as you can literally make up your own by entering unattested scores in the club computer. I was a member of three clubs in the US and I never once played in a competition with cards marked properly - it is all social golf.

Plus you have mulligans, gimmies, improved lies, "leaf rules" and other widespread abuse around lost balls, OB etc.

I've played with US golfers claiming to be off 12 or so and they would be lucky to break 100. The average USGA is supposed to be about 17 but I'd put it closer to 25.

Handicaps here are based on proper scores and are far more accurate.

I don't think there is anything wrong with asking what the average handicap is mathematically.
The upper number is limited to 28 typically. The average in this instances - will work well.

I'd guess in ireland it is 17-18 (guess).

I think i read before that its approx 15 for club golfers, but obviously club golfers play more than your average golfer so its higher for the average golfer. Cant remember the number but its 18+

I know i exported all the handicaps from my club into excel a couple of years ago and the average was 14.8 i think.

Im just talking about the mens sections above, juvenile and seniors included, no ladies handicaps.

It's a pity we don't have the corresponding stats for Ireland. I'd be inclined to assume they're the same, but we all know what trouble assumptions can cause. ;)

    For my club,

based on 680 male members, the average handicap is 17.9

On average logical assumptions work out.

FYI...if you really want to dig into the numbers, go to howdidido.co.uk, you can use their club directory to view handicap lists for any club that are registered with their service (Which I'd imagine is essentially every club in Ireland & the UK)

wouldn't take an enormous amount of effort to pull the data together.

    Or just email them.

I think there are stats for your cat - could be in there already ?
