Engine and gearbox only most likely unless you negotiated otherwise. If it is a main dealer and the car is one of their own brand they might look after you.

Depends on the warranty. My last one was full, covered everything. The missus has an engine drive train and gearbox. Dig out the paperwork.

The paperwork says 3 months/3000 mile warranty. I'm 3 weeks/1600 miles into it. It's not a main dealer but the company are around over 55 years.

Here are the problems I am having with the car, can people advise where I stand with a warranty.

    1. Driver's seat is broken, won't move back or forward and the springs in the same seat are also broken.

    2. Rear brakes aren't working correctly, with the handbrake applied the car keeps moving on hills.

    3. Oil is blacker than black even though the dealer claims it was serviced and I have only done 1500 miles since the purchase.

    4. Power point sockets x 2 are both not working.

The car is a 1.6 diesel Focus.

Can I bring this to a main dealer and tell them bill the garage???

Read over the warranty that was given with car.
The only main warranty from a dealer is "fit for purpose"
None of the things you mention is a major problem and all can be fixed fairly easily.

Oil will go black the second you pour it into the engine. There is no way of telling oil age by looking at it.

Do not bring it somewhere else, dealer is under no obligation to pick up the bill from another garage.

My suggestion is to go back to dealer and complain about the seat, the brakes and the sockets.
If you annoy them enough they will hopefully fix these items.

Contact the dealer and see what they say. You are driving a diesel so the oil will be black straight after the oil change.

yes I agree they are easy enough to fix, just hope I don't have to foot the bill for it. i'll dig out the warranty have a read and come back here once I see what is in the small print

Do not bring the car to a main dealer expecting the garage you bought it from, to pay the bill unless they have agreed to do so.

Used car warranties are not universal in what they cover so it's very difficult for anyone here to know if your warranty covers those repairs.

Talk to the garage and see what they will do . They wont pay for another garage to do the work.

The seats are probably just a broken linkage or a pin out .
Ford handbrakes are known to be poor with auto adjusters seizing up .
Oil in diesels go black straight away
Power sockets is probably a blown fuse

Sent them an email today. So might get a call back tomorrow.

You are right on the oil after i looked it up. First diesel so pretty clueless.

Seat is fcuked. The bar to slide the seat forward is broken off on one side. The springs in the back part of the seat are also broke.

The handbrake is drums and shoes.

You could be right on the fuse.

Which part? I don't see anything there that indicates the warranty covers those defects unless you're hoping the SIMI will force the garage to fix them.

Cobh rings alarm bells! I have no experience of them but have been warned to stay away from a prominently positioned dealer down there. Meant to be dodgy as fook so genuinely hope its not him OP.

    OP: full explanation here
    http://www.consumerhelp.ie/cars-rights-wrong

You do have certain rights, regardless of guarantee- there are a number of possible options open to you but best contact the garage first and try and work with them on addressing the issues- it can be a pain depending on the garage but you've got to do this first and see how it goes.

They key question to ask is "is the car of merchantable quality given the age?"

Do i still have rights beyond the warranty expiry?the car is in good nick to be fair. Cost €8000 so it'd bloody want to be.

You're 3 weeks into a 3 month warranty- you have consumer law on your side. It's all down to condition of car commensurate with age- something like the exhaust going of pads wearing probably won't be covered but if gear box goes you may have some recourse outside of warranty depending on mileage etc or what caused the issue.
You could get an independent mechanic to complete a full paid inspection of your car- that should indicate the things wrong today and the things that might give trouble soon.

I'm going to get an indepenent inspection before the warranty runs out. I agree comsumables like the clutch and pads may be outside the warranty, but the engine, gearbox and turbo should all be covered i'd hope. Might hand it into thw main dealer actually as they said dueing a service they go over the car top to bottom.

Thanks for that smiley. Looks like i won't be buying from there anymore. They were the only place that would give me a good deal on my trade in,hence i went there.

This is where a lot of people get caught. You didn't get a good deal, did you?

I could have gotten better yes. But the car i traded in was 10 years old and 1.8 petrol. I tried to sell it privately for 5 months and couldn't shift it. I got a good offer on it (the 1.8 petrol) and grabbed it. But i wouldn't recommend them. They had that car sold after 2 weeks which i found interesting.

Very OTT thread. Every used car dealer will have a bad reputation to a certain extent from people with unrealistic expectations. As far as I can see these guys were the only people to give you a good deal, and there's no indication they won't go to reasonable lengths to sort any issues you are having.

If the car was serviced 1500 miles ago then going to a main dealer getting them to go over a car "from top to bottom" is ridiculous. As certain as night follows day they will come back with a list of stuff that's "nearly gone" and you'll get yourself into a tizzy trying to get the used car dealer to perform all sorts of preventative maintenance and change half the suspension under warranty on a cheap used car. If something big breaks on the car they should cover it under warranty. Other than that enjoy driving it and get it serviced when it needs it. If you wanted to get it checked from top to bottom then you should have gotten that done before you purchased it.

I've had 22 cars over the course of my life. I checked the car over myself on 2 seperate occasions. At the time of purchase it was fine. But little problems started to crop up (since sorted) plus it is my first diesel. Maybe the car is behaving normally for a diesel mechanically. I don't know to be honest. But the owner wasn't impressed to to hear there was problems. But all in all the issues i highlighted were addressed.

Bar 1 issue yes. The car is unsteady at low idle at times. That wasn't addressed. This only cropped up in the last week.

Seeing as all issues have been fixed maybe these guys dont deserve the bad rep they have gotten (in this thread anyway)

I have had two similar issues with cars purchased at other garages and had similar results to you.
Issue one was a main dealer. The gearbox dropped out of the car 10 days after buying (gear stick actually came off in my hand). Needless to say we got our money back on that one although we had to threaten a court appearance.

Issue 2 was with a 2nd hand dealer and there were DPF issues, EGR issues and a few small other things. We went straight back and with a bit of talking they fixed everything (we had a 3 month warranty but they actually fixed some stuff 9 months after buying)

The 2nd lot of issues came back to bite me 12 months down the road when the turbos went in the car.

Moral of the story - go talk to the garage. If you are under warranty then they will most likely help you out

BTW - I have no affiliation to the garage in Cobh but I did purchase a Prius off them a month ago and we are very happy. They are typical car dealers (pack of chancers) but in the end of the day its up to you to do a bit of homework and check the car over and check service history etc before buying (I have learnt this the hard way)

    Hope it all works out
(We may look at getting a warranty - Mapfre or the likes - after our 3 month warranty with the garage runs out - so I might be back to this forum looking for advise on that!!)
