If the seat's wet, sit on yer hat, a cool head is better than a wet ar5e.

I suppose it depends on the breed.

We have a 12x5'10" ifor williams and would carry 16/17 FR bull calves on the flat with another 12/13 on the decks.

Would there be enough head height in the lower level?

Yes even with some taller Holstein types. We use wood shavings for bedding as it reduces the height and stops them from tripping. Chopped straw would do too if you had a straw chopper. Any very tall/lanky calves go onto the top deck. OH got his cousin to put in a different steel box runner thingie to carry the decks and the same guy folded aluminium to make decks/upper ramp to fit the trailer.
Not enough head height for me and OH when we are unloading/pushing them down the ramp but that is where one of my rotties comes into play.

What make of trailer is it.
As I said ours is an Ifor Williams which had lugs/"L" shaped brackets (near the bend of the roof) to hang the dividing gate. We had to cut the lugs off as calves were getting nicked rubbing against them. We tried covering the lugs with strips of bicycle tyres but it didn't work.

That'd be the earlier additions of the current box, costly when you remove the use of the dividing gate, unless you only use for full loads

Mate of mine got pulled recently. Cops checking the trailer and licence and he thinks it was the department checking on animal welfare. They checked travel times space and everything for each animal. Said they kept them there a fair while going through everything, it would probably want to be kept in mind.

There has been more Garda activity checking livestock trailers/lorries especially during the wee hours due to livestock thefts. I was pulled over by the Garda outside Cavan at 6.30am last week bringing 3 cull FR cows to the factory for a neighbour. They wanted to see my licence and asked me if the cattle were mine. I told them I was transporting them to the factory for a neighbour and showed them the cards and factory form that the neighbour had signed.
