New non driver getting a car...

    Hi lads.

I have zero experience with cars. My partners sisters neighbours are leaving the country and are looking for a home for a Honda Civic 1.3ltr 2004 car.

They're leaving this week and are in Mayo (I'm in Dublin) If they fill out their side of the change of ownership form and send it down to me, can I fill out my side and that's it? The cars mine?

I'd usually ask someone in the family to help out as they know more bout this stuff, but they're away on holidays til the 9th.

I'll be doing lessons around Feb-April as I need to be able to drive for work by next August.

    Any advice appreciated,

    Thanks

Yes you can do it that way or let them put your details on it post off to shannon for you . But if not driving for a while declare it off the road

How do you declare a car off the road?

Give them your details, and they can fill in the registration document and send it off.

As soon as you receive the document, declare the car as being 'off the road'. This means you are not liable for any back tax when you start driving the car.

Just get the declaration of the Gardaí or motor tax office

My details are just my name and address?

Yes. You should receive the registration document roughly a week after it is posted to Shannon. There is a short window after purchasing a car to declare it off the road. This applies if the car is out of tax, it should be said. If the car is taxed currently, it's no big deal.
