Presumably, you'd want to do this to pay less tax. What would the tax be privately?

You might want to check the declaration rf-111a.

Because the van would have to have a very small engine to save any money.

It's fine to tax it private. But you won't be able to use loading bays.

you MUST tax it privately if it isn't used solely for commercial purposes

Oh and the criteria for loading bays is that is taxed commercially and loading. It's not a parking area for random 4x4s and utility companies. (rant over)

You are supposed to complete a declaration that you will only use it commercially.

Rules are rules. If its commercial, you are only supposed to drive it while on business.

However, I know someone that drives their van for both and nobody has EVER batted an eyelid at them.

Boards.ie is the only place in the country where people tax their vans privately, simply because they love giving the government money.

You're highly unlikely to get caught, and if you are you're probably smart enough to have an excuse ready. I've driven the length of the country with my vans, and either bikes or surfboards with me, and not a word has been said, with lots of checkpoints at all hours of the day and night

Ah feck it. I have driven my van to liverpool on business, while taking in a match and beer. Of course, even though I was never stopped, I was on a fact finding mission to see about buying stock in the UK ;)

Hi Pat, not having a go at you here but..
I'm in a very similar position to you but when it's taxed commercially you do not have full use of it privately and if your employer told you you did they are mistaken. I work in a business that offers 24 hour cover so like I you could be going to work at any time. I've never been questioned about my goings when driving the van though.

unless your a taxi ,you can use for both ,for the princely sum of around 90 euros,

Once your insurance says it you can , Gardaí don't really bother with the tax side of it . All you need is your employer to say you need it for work activities on occasion

The point is it is not OK on here to tell people you can use a commercially taxed vehicle privately. Everybody does but it's up to an individual if he wants to take the (small) chance. The official line is you can't.
