Our purchasing group is buying tractor oil for the first time. Doing a bit of research on it. There is a data sheet for every oil with spec, like the following for back end oil

    Typical Properties
    Mobilfluid 426
    Viscosity, ASTM D 445
    cSt @ 40ºC = 59
    cSt @ 100ºC = 9.7
    Brookfield Viscosity, cP (@ -20ºC) 3800
    Viscosity Index, ASTM D 2270 = 149
    Pour Point, ºC, ASTM D 97 = -36
    Flash Point, ºC, ASTM D 92 = 228
    Density @ 15ºC kg/l, ASTM D 4052 = 0.889

From what I can gather, the viscosity at 40+100ºC and Viscosity Index are most important. Think higher VI the better. If anyone knows for sure, or any other relevant info, I would really appreciate it. I hadn't even known about long drain oil (engine 500hr) so at least I am learning something..

You also get the following list

    Specifications and Approvals
Mobilfluid 426 has the following builder approvals:
    Volvo WB 101 X
    ZF-TE-ML 03E/05F/06K/17E/21F X

Mobilfluid 426 meets or exceeds the requirements of:
    Kubota UDT X

Mobilfluid 426 is Recommended by ExxonMobil for use in applications requiring:
    API GL-4
    AGCO Powerfluid 821 XL
    Allison C-4 (Agriculture Applications Only)
    Caterpillar TO-2
    CNH MAT 3505/ MAT 3525
    Denison HF-0, HF-1, HF-2
    FNHA-2-C-201.00
    Ford ESN-M2C-134-D
    J. I. Case MS 1204-07/09
    John Deere J20C
    Vickers 35VQ25
    Massey Ferguson MF M-1145, M-1143, M-1141, M-1135

ASTM is an American standard for starters, so there are European equivalent ones also.

ISO 46 hydraulic oil for example, has a viscosity of 46 centistokes at 40c.
Chart here showing how to convert from the USA to ISO units.

I've actually measured viscosities of different oils in a lab many years ago. Basically viscosity is the thickness of an oil. The test we used involved spinning a disc in a container of oil and measuring the torque generated . The higher the viscosity the greater the torque or resistance. Also when oils are heated they thin out and the viscosity decreases.
You can damage machinery by using the wrong oil so be careful. If oil is too thin, you increase metal on metal wear. Oil too thick and you increase the resistance of moving parts and the oil can't get into small tight clearances to lubricate properly.
Anyway, bit of a rant. My twopence.

I use Mobil 426 for all backends and hydraulic systems. I use it in some vario gearboxes also.
Excellent oil. I wouldn't use anything else.
JD,CIH, NH and Landini here and never a problem.

Our purchasing group have being dealing with Kidd Lubricants for a good few years . Anytime I had a hard question to ask he was able to find out the answer . I go by the manufacturers recommendations and what I like is he often will not give you an answer straight away but will find out rather than winging it and giving you what is in the van .
A lot of the time slippery oil sales men will give you the same oil as paddy up the road uses as he has a yellow digger too.

Be careful with that.....Make sure guys specific exactly what they want, and keep a written record of what they ordered. ....very easy for wrong product to end up in machinery.
Farmer orders from you, you from the sales rep, sales rep to the delivery man....just be careful. ..
