J1 2016 Santa Monica

Myself and one other friend are planning on doing a J1 in Santa Monica.
I'm just wondering if anybody has any advice from previous experience in this area.

Where would be a good place to look for accommodation? I've heard UCLA student accommodation is an option. Also heard about people renting frat houses. Are either of these decent choices/possible to obtain? Is having just 2 people an inconvenience when trying to sort accommodation, or could it be an advantage?

Would anyone have any advice in terms of places to look for jobs? SAYIT are saying that you have to have a 'solid lead on a job', before February 3rd if you want to go to California. Is there certain areas or even specific establishments that have employed Irish in the past that we could contact? Also, has anybody ever played music in a pub while on a J1?

Any other related information/advice would be much appreciated :)
    Thank you!
