Hi,

Electrician is starting next week on new build. Haven't picked a camera system yet, but want to get wires ran to front and back of the house.

Are there systems that are powered by ethernet cable (monitoring and recording, IP), or should i get powered cables routed also, and if so what kind.

Run a cat5 and a R59 coaxial to each location. That will ensure no matter what system you go for you'll be covered.

I'd recommend 1080p resolution at a minimum as it will be very sharp and clear.

Thanks for that. I'll ask them to run both cables.

Where should the dvr box be located. Somewhere hidden I assume (in the event of a break in and they want to take the recordings).

am i right that it has to be connected to the router, so I'll get the electrician to run cable to the router (in tv room)?

The location of the recorder is always a sticking point as it needs to be reasonably accessible to you but yet out of the way of the burglar. Have a good think about it but remember that you might not need to access it unless there's a problem with it or if you want to burn an incident onto a flash drive so it can be fairly well placed out of the way.

You'll need a network cable from the recorder to the router. Also, allow for possibly another cable for connection to Virgin Media access point.

Also, if possible I'd run a HDMI cable to your most used TV's so you'll have the full resolution of the cameras on display.

If there is a longer run to a TV or monitor you can also use these with cat5/6

They've really come down on price. I remember paying nearly €200 a pair a few years ago.

They're fairly limited with distance though, 30m isn't that long.

I think you can get inline boosters.Handy if you a tight space to get a cable through though.
