Have you called around to a few brokers? boxymo are an insurance company for learners that offer competative quotes. However they do need a black box installed, which is something I am against, but if it saves you thousands it could be worth a shot.

What kind of car is it? I'm younger than you and mine was almost half that a few months ago. It has gone up quite a lot in the past couple of months though.

Got quoted higher on a 2 litre on a learners permit.
My sister in law on a learner permit got a similar quote as yourself for a 1.3

Its a crazy situation when it is a legal requirement to have insurance and it is left to private companies to provide this service. There used to be a company called PMPA (i think) which was a state run insurance company which was supposed to provide insurance at reasonable prices but like all good things, this never really worked out.

In australia, you get your compulsory 3rd party cover for approx $650 including road tax also - irrespective of age or type of car/engine size etc. You then have the option to add to this in a private capacity up to fully comprehensive etc. For example, my 21 year old daughter drove a 3.2 lts Vectra and paid the compulsory 650 and an additional $200 per year for extra cover. This equated to Euro 600 per year for tax & insurance on a 3.2 ltr car.

The Government here could also implement this type of cover if they wanted to. They would have to do something about our compo culture but it could be done.

Age of the car could have a lot to do with it. Ask for a quote on a 2012 Yaris. Just out of interest.

The age of your car isn't helping you either find a similar car under 10 years old might help ,
But yeah I'm in the same boat but with a bigger engined car ,that happened to be a gift ,
Looking like asking the credit union for 4 or 5 thousand loan to cover a newer car and the 2 thousand car insurance.

Absolutely rediculous situation at the moment

I've a friend with a 2011 focus and hers was similar quote to mine so age of car doesn't seem to be a excuse.

The problem causing the high prices is that if anyone even taps into your car , doing little or no damage to the car, you get claims for whiplash etc immediately lodged and 15-20k payouts made whereas in France , if ! the claim succeeds you get 3-5k

The poster who mentioned the compo culture has it right.

My insurance for a 1.2 Fiesta 2005 was 1600 in July. 26 years. With AA. Try them! That was after a bit of haggling. Was with a learner permit and no no claims or anything. Got 317 back after passing my test. I put my Mother down as a named driver. This can often bring the price down a little bit. If you have any friends/family members with a full clean license might be worth putting them down.

The cost of insurance has gone crazy though in such a short period of time. I did a few quotes for my boyfriend and the cheapest we could get was 2900 for a Clio! He also has a learner permit and no driving experience.

We've been shopping around for our 21 years old son with learner permit, He was quoted Eur.2980 for a 1.0 Corsa 2001 this was the cheapest we've found; Can't believe it. This has gone viral. We don't know if we're going to take it or not. In other countries motor insurance is affordable whenever you get new or old car. Still remembering 2002 general election poster from PD Michael Mc Dowell saying something like: "we've done a lot, lowered motor insurance" . Here we are rolling back

The age of the car will make a big difference to you here. Having a 15 year old car makes getting insurance difficult no matter what age the driver is. So I would ring around for quotes on a slightly newer car, maybe something 2003 and see how you fair.

Every post I make regarding getting insurance quotes is the same. You have to RING everyone. It will take time. It's a pain in the ass, but it is the only way you'll get a good quote. Ring brokers, companies etc. Best of luck.

insure your son on your own car while he is still on a learner. he is building up named driver time and its considerably cheaper. soon as he passes the test, he can buy his car and take out his own insurance which will factor in his full licence status. I'm constantly amused at the thought that learners should get affordable insurance when they have shown no ability on the road whatsoever.

2 of my kids were named first on my policy for a year, at cost of 800e and 900e respectively on 1.8l mondeo. soon as they passed the test they both got their own cars and own insurance at virtually the same price.

I can see how that may not work for all people though. Perhaps the parents car is automatic, or too nice for a learner to drive. It's not too unreasonable to see the need for a separate car.

Ah Insurance is a nightmare for newbies. Had a learner permit since I was 17 (I'm a 25 yo male now) but could only ever get €2,000 insurance quotes for a 07 Ford Fiesta when I was on my first two permits. My gender and age bracket went against this as stats show 18-25 learners get into more road accidents. Took 20 lessons but being insured on an available car really is the only way to keep up the skill after . Made me delay the driving until my mid 20s as I was a poor student. Now I am on my third permit and on a mission to finally sit a driving test. I managed to get €750 for 8 months insurance. The best I could get. Went through Alan Tierney (broker). Would highly recommend them if you want to shop around for insurance. They said they will hopefully find me a better deal after the 8 months.
