Thinking of getting a second dog.

Currently shoot over a 5 year old Vizsla. Great dog, great temperament, fab nose. Only criticism would be that he doesn't hunt heavy cover(he simply cant get to places that a springer can go) but I can live with that cos TBH I prefer to see the dog do his stuff than shoot loads of birds.

I am currently drawn to a German pointer, possibly a wire hair/smooth hair mix.

Just looking for some general advice.
What are they like to train?
Temperment - nervous ? Aggressive traits?
Do they get jealous around other dogs?
Any health issues - Heart problems, hip dysplasia?
What are they like to retrieve on water?
How do they compare against a setter for instance?

My mind is not made up yet so any advice would be great.
    Thanks in advance.

I have a 3 year old GSP, beautiful dog , very easy to train, great around the kids and house, outstanding shooting dog, rock solid and is retrieving land and water, shot his first bird over him at 11 months BUT!!! And this is why I write this reply, in my opinion, there is a very very very poor selection of decent pups available in Ireland, one dog seems to be responsible for all the pups that appear for sale here, I know someone who went to see a "full bred " champion line pointer lately and it looked like a whippet,! No big chest and strong build you would attribute to the GSP. I am looking for a bitch for 12 months now and i will probably end up goin to the Uk for one!

Well Alan, I'm in West limerick, that sounds like a nice mix of a dog you have there, mine is a Scottish bitch and german dog, speed wouldn't be a huge thing really in the big picture, stamina I suppose would be better, but in general the breeding in GSP in Ireland I think has become so narrow , every pup , advertised I'm only commenting on, seems to be going back to one dog time and time again.those involved with the breed will know what I'm on about.

Hi I also have a 5 year old vizsla and I fully agree that they are not heavy cover dogs..

I also have a vizsla x gsp and he is a great all rounder. He is almost 11 months old and already I would put him ahead of the full vizsla..

He is great around the kids ( have 3) and makes a good house dog.

If your not in a hurry a friend has a gsp bitch in pup and the father is a fully registered vizsla . Think she is due to ha e them something around April

Think I am looking for something 6 months old+, possibly half trained. Don't know if I want to go through the whole "puppy phase".

BTW, the breeder of my Vizsla crossed his bitch with an English setter (both his own) and the resulting pups are serious dogs.
