season 2 is set in the 70's and the first season is set in modern times but it has some of the same characters so it would play chronologically if you watched them in the order season 2 and then 1

You wouldn't really need to watch season 1 before season two but there are a few storylines that relate to season 1.

I prefer the 1st season of Fargo.

Sorry to hijack..I've seen neither series or the film, would you recommend watching the film first or has that nothing to do with the series?

Watch the film first because it's a masterpiece.

A few bits in season 1 relate to the movie, but it'd make no odds really if you haven't seen it.

The movie doesn't have anything to do with the TV series. By all means watch the movie,if you want to, as it is a cracking piece of stand alone, cinematic art. But if you don't watch it, the TV series will still make just as much sense. There are a few similar characters (they both have a hen pecked husband & a very plucky female cop) in the TV series and the movie, but there are no cross over characters, or story lines.....just bone chillingly cold & snowy locations.

This isn't accurate. There are overlapping storylines but none that require you to have seen either side to enjoy the other. They intersect but are (mostly) incidental.

Which ones over lap? Make it vague, so as not to "spoil" the OP, I'll probably still know what you mean.

    Which characters?

    Which characters?

The guy who owns the cafe (Lou?) who was a cop before he retired and bought the cafe. His daughter (the female cop...Molly? sorry, I'm crap at remembering characters names :o ) was very young at the time.

S2 features a case he worked on when he was a cop. He mentions it a couple of times in S1, but he doesn't go into any great detail on it.

I thought the question was about links between the film and Season 1?

If so, there are a couple of direct links (and lots of references.

In the movie....money is buried in the snow on the side of a desolate road along a fence, using his red ice scraper as a marker so he remembers where the money is located.

In the TV series.....Broke and desperate, Milos flees to Minnesota with his family in 1987 – except along the way, he runs out of gas. His car just happens to stall out at the exact spot where Carl buried his briefcase full of money. Milos spies the ice scraper, digs, and finds the treasure. The scene firmly plants the series within the same universe as the film.

It was great to see what happened with the cash!

    Which characters?

In S1, Keith Carradine plays Lou Solverson and vaguely mentions a case he worked on as a cop, years previous. In S2, Patrick Wilson plays the same character, many years previous, working that case.

    another link -
the 2 boys Hanzee rescues from the bullies are probably Numbers and Wrench from S1, and Hanzee's new identity reveals him to the mob boss killed by Billy Bob Thornton in S1.

there's also loads of references to other Coen Bros movies - music, scenarios, lines of dialogue etc. so if you're a Coen Bros fan (and if not, why not?!) you'll get a kick out of watching the Fargo series.

Always remember Billy Bob thorton in comedy roles. He plays the psycho very well in the first series of Fargo. yet to understand who or what is Fargo

    Fargo, North Dakota

I've just enjoyed series 1 recently

Indicators would suggest that 'fargo' is not a true story. Were the Coen brothers making all this up. To suggest it is a true story when it is not is a bit weird

It's definitely a true story, especially season 2.

As described 'you are a good man' and response 'I like to think I have good intentions'. Fargo is very good. As folks die left, right and centre Second series not as good as first but definitely worth watching

First season is excellent, wasn't a fan of the second season and for me the third season is the best one.
