    Hi all,

Looking to replace an 07 Jetta because of the tax mainly. It's costing me 700+ per year. Don't have a huge budget (8K max) so only realistically looking to move up to an 09.

I'm doing 90 miles of motorway driving every day. The better half is suggesting an Astra or an i30, maybe it's a male thing but i'd be hoping to stay saloon. Any suggestions welcome.

    Thanks

Is the 8k on top of what you get for the Jetta?

If so then maybe something like a Ford Focus saloon:

Realistically though if your only changing for cheaper tax then spending 8k to reduce the tax outlet will take you a good few years to make it financially viable.

No, i'm thinking i might get somewhere between 4 and 5 for the Jetta and then spend a max of 8 on a replacement

Well lets say spending 4k on top of what you get for the Jetta means it will take you about 8 years before you break even on the motor tax savings (700 per year on the Jetta versus 200 per year on a 08+ car).

the motor tax is E710. Realistically, what are you looking at best case scenario with the alternative E280 on emissions? Borrowing 4-5k (plus the interest if applicable) it makes no sense...

But the resale value of a car that costs 700 to tax is already plummeting where as in two years time there will likely still be a 4K difference in the value of the two cars.
The up side being that i might have the newer car for the next couple of years.

No mention of borrowing. I appreciate the financial advise and all but i was really only asking what would be a descent 08 car for around the 8K mark.

the decent 08 car makes and models will be the same as the decent 07 cars, the question then is, how much are they on emissions v the older system...

on carzone you can put in a lot of criteria, so i put in 2008-2009, saloon, diesel, max price 9000, max engine 2L (engine size doesnt really matter any more with emissions) its just a shame you cant filter the results based on motor tax rate too... But if you take a look at the below and tweak the options, it would give you a good idea of what your options would be...

Your talking about an 8 year old car versus a 9 year old car, both will have suffered the majority of their depreciation at this stage and the older they get the less of a gap there will be in resale values. Anyways I've given my view and will let it at that. But if you just want a change of car then fair enough, nothing wrong with it but you will rarely find justifying it through depreciation or motor tax.
