Cheaper to Go Up or Stay Low?

    Hi there,

We have plans already for our future home and wondering if anybody in the know can help.

The plans have 2/3's of the area on ground floor and we want to adjust the plans somewhat. We're wondering would it typically be cheaper to go up to a second storey and stack the house rather than expand on the ground floor. Does the extra cost in going up negate the costs of the added foundations and roofing of the ground floor?

Also what would people's experiences with flat roofs be like for construction costs. Cheaper than standard roofs or more expensive if done correctly?
