Rear axle bent?

I've a Citroen xsara, and the rear driver side tyre had started to rub on the inside of the arch. Worse with people in the car. I brought it to a garage and he says the axle is bent. The car had just passed the nct. I would have thought a bent axle would have shown up in that. From behind, the wheel seems to be leaning in at the top. Would a bent axle cause that?

Its most likely not bent but the axle bearings have collapsed.
Have a look underneath and you will see where the axle splits see is the gap same on top and bottom id say the gap is bigger on the bottom meaning the bearings are gone.

I can't really tell by looking. Surely the mechanic would notice that.

Take it somewhere else and get a second opinion.

How long is it wearing tyres ?? It might not have been gone when you had it nctd plus unless you are familiar with them you may not be aware of the problem with them.

If you stand back from the back of the car you should see the wheels lying in on the top and thats why its wearing the inside of the tyre.

Second hand axle is likely your best bet if you can get a good one because once those bearings are gone for a while they damage the inside of the axle.

The problem was there when it had the nct. Not as bad though. Tyres are good except it rub on the inside of the arch when people are in the back and over speed bumps. Rang around and can get a reconditioned one for 280 Euro.
Any idea of labour on that?

You can get a reconditioned axle for €250 or so. A lad in Kilkenny does them. We have fitted several with no issues.

They are a service item to be rebuilt every 8 years, but noone bothers at that age sadly! Be careful as there are many variants of torsion bar, anti-roll bar and toe/camber.

They're in Kilkenny. Ruthmotorservices.com. The axle is 280. But thats taken the old axle as well. I'd no way of getting it off and down to them
So they're gonna fit it for me for an extra 100.

Not saying you are wrong but where does it say that they are a service item?

that would be close enough to most places 3 hours chargeable here at 40 per hour

Just an update. Got job done this morning. It cost 360. Took them 2 hours. Get a guarantee with that on the axle for a year. They dropped me down the town and then came and collected me when it was done. Great service.
    The axle bearings had collapsed.
