For most of the car rental places in Malaga remember that usually you have to pay a full tank of petrol, plus insurance if you want anything over the basic. That can end up doubling the price if you think you have a bargain! Can still work out cheaper than Hertz etc but just something to be aware of.

I've used Record as well as some of the other 'cheaper' companies there and never had any issues once you know what to expect and stick to their rules.

I usually book using Doyouspain.com or carjet.com . Both are kind of an agency who will search all the companies and give you cheapest. One other thing to be aware of is whether the company have their desk in the airport or if you've to get a mini bus off to their office. I always spent a few euro extra to pick a place right in the terminal.

Pretty much all the cheaper places will have fairly long queues, esp at peak times, you could end up waiting an hour or more, although off season we've been lucky and sometimes only waited 5/10 mins.

+1 That's exactly as I found it last October, large crowd at the Sixt counter and nobody at all at Hertz. I had paid the extra for Hertz and had the car keys in my hand within two minutes of arriving at the desk, two minutes later I was sitting in the car in the underground car park in the airport. No hard sell with insurance, no sneaky fuel policy, no shuttle to a distant compound, well worth the premium price as far as I'm concerned. On the way back to the airport I topped up the tank, dropped the keys of to a lady at a Hertz desk in the underground car park and a few minutes later I was checked in and through security. The cost was what I paid on the internet when making the booking, not a cent sought or paid for after the event.

I've used Helle Hollis at Malaga airport, they have a fair fuel policy & you can pay a little extra for the rep to meet you in the arrival hall, walk you to the car parked outside, sign the rental agreement & drive away

Twice used Hertz at Malaga airport before Christmas. Very positive experience. Trip Advisor forums are full of horror stories about rentals in Malaga Airport.
There is no such thing as a cheap rental. The company will get the money out of you by one way or another. Beware of renting a car anywhere... be sure to read the small print and conform exactly to rental conditions.....then there will be no problems.

Definitely be aware of the small print, but even knowing that we still used the cheaper companies as with the fuel (about 70/80 eur sometimes!) and insurance (can't rem but maybe 40/50 extra per week), it was still significantly cheaper. We were a couple - no kids etc so the wait wasn't too big of a deal. Usually if we had checked in bags on of us would wait at the luggage carousel and the other would head down and start queuing.

I can't advise enough on taking the extra insurance though, with all companies. The basic covers very little. So many things can happen-one time we had the car broken into and only for we had full insurance we would have been charged for a new locking system as thieves damaged one of the car door locks. Because we had the top insurance we just handed back the keys and had to pay nothing.

If you book online with an agency or booking site don't take the additional insurance with them. If you do and something happens the car company claim off you and you claim from the booking/insurance people you got it from. If you wait and get the extra insurance at the desk in airport it's done with the car company so if anything happens they just cover it and you don't have to be the middle man.

I second Hellehollis, no nasty surprises with the fuel policy, the following code will get you a 15% discount, at least it did for us last summer "H10120". Cant recommend them enough, we got our car hire excess from AIG for much cheaper then Hellehollis though.

I wouldn't recommend Marbesol. Hired a car there last week. They charged €87 for petrol that hardly cost €40/50. Very heavy and almost aggressive sell on excess insurance even though I have an annual excess policy. They charged €1200 for excess to my visa and am waiting for a refund.
