    Hi all,
Has anyone bought a diamond engagement ring in Antwerp since the new cash laws were introduced in 2014? Just seeing if its worth going over if you can't get the tax off through a cash deal and since the dollar is so strong against the euro! Lots of posts on here about pre 2014 diamond sales alright.
    Any updates would be great!

We got ours in Antwerp in April 2014 and had no issues anyway, paid in cash.

Not sure what laws you are talking about though.

I think the op is referring to the new laws where cant pay more than 10% of the cost in cash. I wonder where is cheapest now for engagement rings, Dublin, Antwerp or London

    Hi guys,
Ye Im talking about the new 10% cash laws in Antwerp. As of this year you can only pay 10% of the total ring value in cash. Its to cut down on laundering money etc. (so I have read).
Anyone been over recently to buy an engagement ring??

    Hi Irish Hound,

Any update on this. Did you go over? Was cash a problem?

    Hi,

Didn't go over. Decided to stay local (Dublin) due to the benefit of aftercare i.e free lifetime, cleaning, free ring check once a year etc.
I didn't want to take the risk of the large amount of cash and walking around Antwerp. However, a guy did PM me and said he went over last month and they still did take cash and gave a cash price but he had to go back over and collect it.
I went with Voltaire in the end. Great service and dealt with my constant questions without any problems. Never forced me and always listened to what I wanted so would highly recommend them. Plus if there is a problem with the ring or its too big for my OH's finger theyll size it and the biggest plus is if my OH doesnt like the ring I can still change it to what she likes. I wouldnt get that service in Antwerp so that made my mind up. Hopefully she will like the ring I'm getting made - meant to say that too, Voltaire let you design the style of your ring if you're feeling adventurous!

I am only back from Antwerp around a week now and I got my OH a beautiful ring for cash. I reckon the fact I brought cash was the real reason I was able to get this otherwise it would have been way out of my budget. I won't divulge the name of the jeweller here for fear he'd get in trouble but I got his name from a number of posts referring to a very positive experience with him here on boards.

Thanks for the reply and the information. Glad you got the ring your OH wanted. Did you get to bring it home or was it sent after?

Irish Hound, thanks also for the reply im glad you got sorted here.

Interesting to hear that its still possible to get a good deal for cash over there. I wonder if the numbers going to Antwerp have been significantly affected.

We flew over on the Tuesday morning into Brussels. Got a train to Antwerp arriving at around noon and picked the ring at around 5pm. The ring maker took her size and a deposit and we agreed to come back at midday on the Thursday. The ring was perfect, beyond our expectations. He explained that if we wanted we could go for another option of a complete design of our own and he would make it and send it over. TBH I felt very secure dealing with this guy, posts on boards galore of people who had it sent over with DHL but the ring we wanted he had there and then so no need for us.

Antwerp is a beautiful city, we really fell in love with the place.

Oh sounds like a great experience. Going to be there next Monday until Friday and cant wait to relax in the city for a couple of days after picking the ring.
