    Hi everyone,

I've been looking at all the threads around here and most complain about the high price of insurance, however there is none about how foreigners are treated.

Last year I managed to get a car insured in august about 5 months after I arrived in Ireland(from Romania).
This year one of my italian coworkers who arrived shortly after me is refused quotes left, right and center with the insurers saying that they don't insure people who have been in Ireland for less then one year.

    Is this a new thing?

Relatively new yes, most will insist on at least 1 years driving experience in Ireland.

There is a company that deals specifically with people in your situation, for ex pats etc but I can't remember their name, I'm sure someone in here will know.

I'd understand a requirement to do a number of lessons with an instructor but one year experience with noone insuring is like the chicken and the egg.

This guy has 15+ years experience in Italy and a number of years NCB from his insurer in Italy but they didn't even care about that when they hear that he arrived in Ireland 6 months ago.

Would imagine its very hard for Romanian to get insurance - first thing you think of is insurance scam !. Romanians along with Nigerians have the worst reputation you can get !!

Romanians? I think you're confused between Roma and Romanians. Polar opposites. That, and equality legislation would tear that sales tactic a new hole.

Generally, brokers should be able to help in those cases.

Tell your friend to look at this guys. they sell insurance for expats underwritten by AIG.

Insurance in Ireland is a racket unless your middle age woman with a micra then magically a decent quote will suddenly appear.

Call them all or go to a broker it will not be cheap

Insurance companies are also not keen on old cars refusing to insure 12 + year old cars for reasons unknown.

Also seems stupid but some insurance companies will actually reduce premium if your partner is named on policy.

    Best of luck

@Visual: I know that all to well.

Problem was my colleague is a 35 year old with alot of driving experience in Italy but most insurance companies refused to insure him on the basis he was here for less then 1 year.
I've looked at clements.com and it looks like they might insure him the conditions seems to be over 25 years and less then 1 year in Ireland.

I've let him know about that broker and he'll give them a call tomorrow for more details.
