Polo 1.0L Gearbox wanted

    Hi,

I'm looking for a 5 speed, manual gearbox for my 1999 VW Polo 1.0L, AER engine code. I could chance buying from a car dismantler but don't want to risk fitting a box and finding it's also in need of reconditioning. I'd prefer to buy from someone who can verify the box is good and preferably in the Munster region

Has anyone experience of sending a gearbox to a specialist to recondition and typically what would it cost?

Try naas gearbox centre. The sad reality though is that the car is worth very little fixed and you will pay a fair percentage of the cars value on getting it done.

I'd only go down the route of gearbox replacement if the rest of the car is in very good condition. As colm says you'll probably end up spending more than the cars worth sorting it

    Thanks for the advice folks.

Yes, you are correct but isn't it the problem with holding onto a car for too long, it's difficult to part company with it. I'm amazed by these little cars - they feel like a bigger car to drive, very comfortable and economical and the low gearing make them feel faster than they are! My 2 kids learned to drive in it and passed their test with it. I do all my own spanner work so I'll save on labour costs. If I got a good 'box for reasonable money I'd take a chance.

All of that said, it's amazing how difficult some parts are to get second hand for it. Last week I needed to replace a 51/2j 13 wheel and couldn't source one! Plenty of 41/2j 13 but not 51/2. I bought a new one from the main dealer for a reasonable €42.
