Insurance Query Regarding Previous Accident As A Named Driver

    Hi all,

I have a query regarding motor insurance that I'd love some feedback on.

About 10 years ago while very young I had an accident while driving as a named driver on someone else's insurance policy. No injuries to either party thankfully (I went into the back of someone) but there was about €4,000 worth of damage to another car which was covered by the insurer at the time.

To cut a long story short the plug was pulled on my driving at that point but now circumstances have changed and I need to get driving again. I recently passed my Theory Test again and I'm about to start into the EDT lessons.

My question is regarding when I go to get insured on my own car and policy this time.

As the accident was on someone else's policy, will this still have an impact on my insurance this time or is it a case of when you have an accident on someone else's policy it is only they who is impacted (e.g. loss of their no claims bonus etc which happened)? Do I need to make sure to declare this accident when opening a new policy or will the potential insurer be able to see it on a computer etc and take this into account when calculating a quote?

Basically, should I prepare myself to be hit (which is obviously fair enough) or am I starting from a blank canvas due to the fact my previous accident was on another person's policy?

Any feedback is much appreciated. :)

    It depends on the Insurer.
Some will ask if you were ever involved in an accident, etc.
Some will ask if you were involved in an accident in the last 5 years for example.
Have a look at a few online proposal forms and see which Insurers ask the right (or wrong) questions.
If an Insurer only asks if you were involved in an accident in the past 7 years then obviously you are not lying by saying 'no'. If they are not interested in any activity beyond 7 years then that's the way they do business. You are not evading the truth if they specifically give a timeframe that suits your particular situation.
