There's no harm in giving people a choice of games to watch

Having the two games be at 5pm and 7pm (for telly purposes) is a great idea, especially for people going to the 5pm game. You can head for home at a decent time. It's madness to be making people drive across the country at 8.30/9pm, on freezing cold & icy nights in February and March.

A lot of people work on a Saturday, so 5pm isn't going to be too practical to get to a match.

That's without consider other sports which a 5pm will be in contention with, either on at the same time or when a supporter would need to be travelling.

The roads issue is a bit of a non issue, they won't ever be that bad that you are putting yourself in unnecessary danger (in my opinion)!

Yes but if your paying the sub but can only watch half the content. You would not have half the PL or half the ECC rugby on St the same time. 6pm and 7.35pm would be better.

I'm presuming TG4 will be providing live and deferred of the Sunday games.... Is there any listings/schedule of same?

Have you ever driven from Dublin to Donegal or West Cork in February, when you leave Dublin at 9pm and you don't get home 'till well after midnight? Trust me, the roads can be an issue, especially for the non motorway part of the trip.

I do accept your point about other sports being on. The league is slap bang in the middle of the Six Nations territory too, so Setanta are entitled to want the games to be on when they will get the most viewers. It still doesn't make starting a long journey at 8.30/9pm any easier though.

Yes, numerous times. Non issue for me.

7 o'clock throw ins on a Saturday give some time for the normal Saturday afternoon shopping traffic to clear. It can be a nightmare trying to find parking on an average Saturday afternoon in a provincial town.

You get six channels for your Setanta subscription. You can only watch one of them at a time so you're watching a lot less than half the content.

The Premier League has a large number of it's games on at the same time. They're not all available here or in the UK but many of the companies that are paying for the overseas rights have red button options where you pick the game you want to watch eg Fox Sports.

It is rare that TV companies like sky, Bt or even Rte would put to games form the same league on at the same time. As you say most Primer league games at 3pm are not live in Ireland but the games that are live are never on at the same time. Most GAA league games are not on TV so surly it is better to have the one’s that are on Tv live at different times. You would never have RTE showing live champions games on RTE 1 and RTE 2 at the same time its usually 2pm and 4pm (wile geame that are not on tv are usually 3.30pm) , and I think there has only been one clash between RTE and Sky when a replay was involved.

Sky had different games from the ERCC on different channels at the same time over the weekend. When Sky had coverage of the champions league you could watch every game. They didn't tell the lads in Paris to wait until the game in London was over.

I take your point this happens, but I can’t see how this is better. There are only two live games of gaa on TV, with the rugby and soccer there are many live games so its heard to fit them all in and it is not often in rugby that teams from the same country clash on tv at the same time. Also in soccer the champion’s league last16 games are spread out on different days to take this into account.

I just think it’s better to have the games timed like they do in the summer two live games one after each other. But I understand you disagree with me.

Watch one match live and record the other one using Sky + box or equivalent ?

On both channels they are showing the other game in full after the live game, so you can see both games back to back.

next weekend, the GAA coverage starts on Tg4 on Friday at 8.30 pm with the hour long Seo Sport which previews the Hurling league games.
Theres then 2 x football club semi finals on Saturday and 2 x hurling league games on TG4 (3hrs 47mins plus 3hrs 55mins)
There's an hour long highlights programme "League Sunday" on RTE at 7.30pm and at 8.30 on Monday on TG4 another hour long highlights programme "GAA 2016"

If thats not enough after almost 11 hours of GAA coverage free to air, there's 2 FURTHER games on Setanta live on Saturday evening.

does anyone actually have time for all this GAA coverage ?

Shame the France v England Six Nations game is on so late. That probably played a part in Setanta not airing a game tonight. Pity. I'd much prefer watching Clare & Limerick duke it out, or the Dubs v KK.

Live coverage today of the GAA All-Ireland Post Primary Schools Hurling Finals from Semple Stadium, Thurles on TG4.

The Paddy Buggy Cup Hurling B Schools Final between Monastery National School (Tipperary) and St Louis Grammar School (Antrim) begins at 2:15pm with the Croke Cup A Final between Ardscoil Rís (Limerick) and St Kieran's College (Kilkenny) starting at 4pm

Live coverage on Saturday of the GAA All-Ireland Post Primary Schools Football Finals from Croke Park on TG4.
    Saturday,

Gallen CS Ferbane (Offaly) take on Holy Rosary College Moutbellew (Galway) in the Paddy Drummond Cup B Final at 13.15 while St. Brendans, Killarney (Kerry) play St. Patricks (Derry) in the Hogan Cup A Final at 15:00.

A bit biased as it's my alma mater but the St Brendans team are a serious outfit - they won the semi-final by 18 points and the Munster final by 29 points and have a chunk of lads likely to be involved with the Kerry minors.

The Kerry v Cork game is the football game on Sunday at 14:00 and it's followed by the Tipperary v Clare hurling at 15:45

U21 football semifinals on TG4 tomorrow, Dublin v Mayo at 2:15 followed by Cork v Monaghan at 4:15

League semifinals on Sunday, Waterford v Limerick at 1:30 with Clare v Kilkenny at 3:45

I normally wouldnt bother with quoting viewing figures, but the league finals on Sunday were the most watched programme on TG4 ever, and the combined figure of 739,000 along with the Laochra 1916 commemoration is up there with last years Hurling final on RTE.
    http://www.tg4.ie/en/corporate/press/press-releases/2016-2/20-04-16-1/
and the figures for top programmes in 2015

still no word on what championship games are to be televised, but there's still a hurling league final before the full focus comes onto the championships.

Delighted for TG4,they deserved 2 top quality games what with their top notch GAA coverage. The Laochra 1916 commemoration was excellent.Superb singers..that Lisa Lambe was superb, never heard of her before.

RTE's GAA coverage is practically non existent between September and June. Usually even comes behind the riveting goings on in the English second division - if at all! - on radio sports bulletins.

GAA should seriously consider giving TG4 the first pick, and the finals, of the championship.

You have to laugh at people giving out about the coverage being in Irish. The reasoning being that since they're our "native games" they have an inherent right to commentary in english. I'd have thought the native language goes well with the native games.

Then again, if after years of seeing TG4 they still have trouble with understanding "poc amach", "pasann sé an liathróid" or "ciceann sé poínte", they're probably not the brightest to begin with. The commentary is fairly formulaic.

I don't really give out about them being in Irish as much as I probably used to as at this stage I'm just glad that they're on at all but for someone like myself that never had an Irish class in their life the TG4 coverage may as well be in Swahili. I would prefer for them to be in English so I would know what they're saying, but having listened to the punditry on RTE for years I'm probably better off not knowing what they say because I complain more about Brolly and Spillane than I do about the Irish coverage lol.

I think it would make far more sense for the GAA to set up their own television station.

The GAA shows are consistently the top performers for TG4 (however that's not as impressive an achievement as it sounds as their audiences for other programmes is fairly miniscule - last month Under Siege and Under Siege 2 were the 8th and 9th highest rated shows)

Would be interesting, but impossible. to know how much of the audience on Sunday was for the match and how much attracted mainly by Laochra.

I didn't get the impression that there were that many neutrals there. Vast majority of people in the ground and about the place were from the four counties involved. Dublin and Kerry is huge draw, and it was properly advertised and promoted for a change. Kudoes to all involved.

Regarding the language issue, most people watching would have been taught Irish in school and as someone said, the vocabulary is not exactly exhaustive!

I rarely use Irish but I can follow most of the commentary and analysis and in fact have improved greatly from watching TG4 games. The gas thing is that the same people complaining about not understanding - or trying to understand - Irish (despite in 95% of cases having spent 13/14 years learning it!), would be boasting about picking up even a few words of Spanish on their holidays. We are a strange nation it has to be said.

The majority of people from the 6 counties have little to no Irish and were not taught it in School. My secondary school had over 1000 pupils and 1 Irish teacher. We did none in Primary School.

Thankfully with the rise in Gael schools that trend should be reversing, but you can't expect the GAA or TG4 to cater for only those from the North with no Irish so I've no problem with it being in Irish.

I do think they should probably have the subtitles optional because it must be annoying as an Irish speaker to be forced to have English subs all the time.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,665 ✭✭✭Bonniedog

People from six counties don't usually have the psychological hang up about Irish that many people down here do. I don't pretend to understand it. Mind you a lot of the same people would also hate gaelic games so they are hardly major part of TG4 audience!

Not sure how the subtitles work, but they must be a nuisance if you can't switch them off.

A few times I have watched a few Munster away games on the Welsh channel, there was the option for Sky viewers of having English commentary via the red button

So was maths and learning how to read and write!

There is a definite post colonial thing, inferiority complex or something that motivates a lot of the dislike of Irish and indeed of the GAA. You don't hear as much out of such types these days thank God :)

The AI championship should be broadcast in the language that the overwhelming majority of the people in this country speak and understand. That is just basic common sense imo.

I have zero interest in the cultural politics of it all, mainly because I find the attitudes of "I'm more Irish than you, because I speak Irish and you don't" brigade, to be utterly toxic.

So bring on the common sense. God knows the GAA could do with a lot more of it, right across the board.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,665 ✭✭✭Bonniedog

My argument in favour of TG4 is that they show the games, club and county, all the year around.

GAA is lucky to get a mention on daily sports news with RTE and Newstalk and TV3 obsession with that boring sh1te across the water.

I don't give a somersaulting fart who is going to win the wendyball in England. If people do, then there are plenty of ways for them to find out.

Give GAA coverage to TG4 I say!
