I have been dosing myself with Vitamin C tablets. Not working. Lemsip....not working. Now I got this VILE stuff in a herbal shop called olive leaf extract. It tastes like if you got a glass of water, added 20 cigarette butts and mixed it all together. Is there an easier way to sort this out ?

Repeatedly shove a screwdriver into your eyeballs. The pain from that will take your mind off your cold.

    You're welcome.

hot whiskey... plenty of whiskey, a few cloves, slice of orange, spoon of brown sugar. Make it in a mug and top up with hot water as you go along.

There is a very bad dose going about, make sure you get rid of it before it goes to your chest.

Nothing really...the best thing I've found over the years is though is to sweat it out...I run, lift and hit the sauna after...do that for 2 or 3 days and it's gone. Otherwise I'm stuck with a cold for a week.

    This is disgusting but whatever:

So you have to be off work or whatever and just sitting at home or else it's almost impossible. No sniffing. Basically every time you feel something in your nose blow it. Don't sniff it back in. If you cough and there is phlegm then don't swallow it, spit it out.

For me, if I can do this (if I'm off work), the cold will be gone in about 48hours.

And as another poster said sweating, a really hot shower works for me in combination with not letting any snot/phlegm back into your body.

    Two options:

    1) the juice of half a lemon, a large spoon of honey, topped up with boiling water (and maybe a tot of rum/whiskey). To be taken as needed.

    2) Raw garlic. Chew a clove if you can stomach it, mix a few crushed cloves into mashed potato if you can't.

Hot whiskey is good for nothing in cold weather. Unless you drink it under the blankets out of the hot water bottle, it's a complete waste of time. People should only drink hot whiskey in warm weather.

A good feed of fruit and water, and go to bed and don't get out of it again until you're better. Listen to the wise old man.

Mix twenty cigarette butts in a glass of water.

For me, sleeping like bejaysus seems to be the cure for a horrible cold. Nurofen, hot drinks, spicy food, whiskey and keeping warm provide relief but they don't actually alleviate the condition (apart from Nurofen reducing an increased temperature as far as I know) but a really deep, lengthy sleep seems to kill it.

Last dose I got, left work feeling miserable on the Friday evening - straight home to bed, slept until Saturday afternoon. Felt perfect.

Last dose before that (thought I was getting the flu but it was actually just a really nasty cold) I slept from about 6pm until midnight - woke up because I was hungry so got something to eat. Went back to sleep then until 5pm the next day. Totally killed the fecker.

The bitch for me however is that it nearly always turns into a sinus infection afterwards, and while I wouldn't be feeling as unwell or needing to take time off work (moreso just uncomfortable) that's much harder to get rid of.

I remember I had a really bad dose a year ago. My wife was telling her sister about it on the phone and she said "Oh yeah....man flu....". I nearly hit the roof

You can relieve the symptoms of a cold but only time can cure it at the moment. You just have to make sure your body is in good shape to fight it, so plenty of rest and decent meals.

The only thing the oversaturation of vitamin c will get you is expensive urine.

I'd agree with a hot toddy, but a long soak in a really hot bath followed by a strong cup of tea works for me.

Where I come from, flat 7-up (apparently) cures everything.

From an upset tummy to uncle Hughies head dropping off, "flat 7-up" has been my ma's prescription.

I should state I don't I know, or have any affiliation with fido-dido.

There is a lot of myths re remedies for the common cold.

The fact is that most of the time it is a virus for which no cure exists!!

All the medicines advertised to beat colds can only relieve the SYMPTOMS, so don't cure.

The only way is time, your immune system has to fight away the virus.

This is what I meant about myth. How could that possibly help? Placebo I guess.

Its so sour that it takes your mind of your cold. But it works even in a very small hot lemon with water if you can't handle the juice.

The only thing that has ever worked for me is a very hot curry. It's the tuneric that does the job along with the chillies

Call your local Indian and explain you want their fire house special for a cold

Oh and keep a toilet roll in the freezer

Sound logic....so is sourness induced mind occupation the only way to take your mind off the cold? :pac:

    Yes

But its better than some replies here hot curries that will leave you on the toilet for a week or enemas.

Get yourself to a steam room with a bottle of Olbas oil..

Failing that just tear the stomach out of yourself.

Hot whiskys with lots of honey, lemon and cloves in it. A good dollop of Vicks vapo rub under your nose and on your temples, it's really good on the soles of your feet with socks on when you're in bed to ease coughing. The Tiger balm is really good for aches and pains too. Feel better soon.

Time, keep yourself comfortably warm, well fed and watered.

Have a few hot showers to clear the nose and sinuses and just let your immune system kill the ****ing zombie virus ****s.

Just take it easy and let your body put all of its resources into virus killing! Sleep if you feel the need.

There is no cure for the common cold, except that your own immune system will take care of it at no extra cost.

If you want to make yourself feel better while your immune system does its thing, then paracetamol or hot whiskey is the thing.

Don't waste your money on vitamin C or anything like that.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 368 ✭✭xband

Over doing vitamin C isn't going to do much.

Get yourself a bag of nice, easy peak oranges or clementines instead! Much tastier, more uplifting due to the impact on the senses and probably far better for you.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 33,761 ✭✭✭✭RobertKK

Just get on with life, it is just the common cold, take some paracetamol. drink enough water/liquid and forget about it. Maybe some caffeine for extra energy.

It might not cure it, but there's no harm in giving your immune system a bit of a boost with some vitamins.

Doesn't work- it's been tested. Unless you're already Vit C deficient (which is very rare), or you live in the Arctic, you get no benefit, even from "megadosing".

I'll let you in on a secret. There is no cure for the common cold. Just pharmaceutical companies trying to make money.

And natural remedy companies trying to sell themselves as an alternative. They're both spoofing, the pharma companies use careful language like "helps treat the symptoms" and the alternatives just don't make any specific claims at all. They leave that to their many advocates.

Overdosing on vitamins is like topping up the oil in your car, way above the max line.. The least worse outcome is that it will waste your money.

As my x-mother in law who's a nurse used to say, "if you take nothing for a cold it will take 7 days to leave you and if you take medication, it'll be gone in a week".

I really miss her, you know, my mother in law.
