The Irish new agencies are having a great time saying that cannabis made one person in a clinical trial brain dead. With a little bit of research I'm now reading it's not actually cannabis in the trial but a synthetic cannabinoid. But don't let the truth get in the way of a good headline.

I guess now that Pharma has managed to make a dangerous version of cannabis we'll be seeing it on the shelves of our chemists some time soon.

    From RTE:

Ms Touraine said the drug, which was being tested in a Phase I trial in France by Biotrial for Bial, contained neither cannabis nor any substance derived from cannabis.

    Fairly clear.

I never think to look at RTE, everywhere else I looked said cannabis.

"One man is brain-dead and another five people are in hospital after an experimental drug was administered to 90 people in a French clinical trial.
There is no known antidote to the drug, the chief neuroscientist at the hospital in Rennes said.
Of the five men in hospital, three could have permanent brain damage, Gilles Edan added.
Reports that the drug is a cannabis-based painkiller have been denied by the health ministry."

"The six men who were hospitalised were the group who had taken the drug regularly and had taken the most."

    Grim stuff.

Would not have had happened if they just took normal cannabis for pain relief

The drug was not an intended pain killer nor had it anything to do with cannabis.
experimental medication designed to treat mood disorders such as anxiety

The drug was supposed to target the endocannabinoid system in order to achieve the intended effects.

I'd hate to ever see it on the shelves in pharmacies anyway.

And I say that as an occasional smoker of it. Cannabinoids, or any other molecule that might be beneficial to health should not be mashed into the wider debate about legislation regarding the plant itself.

What is the reason for using a synthetic canabinoid instead of the real stuff in this case?

They were not using synthetic cannabinoids in this case.

In the link given a few posts above...http://www.theguardian.com/science/2016/jan/15/six-volunteers-in-hospital-after-unprecedented-accident-in-french-drug-trial
Contrary to earlier reports, the health minister Marisol Touraine stressed that the drug did not contain cannabis or any element derived from cannabis. The minister said the drug was meant to act on the body’s endocannabinoid system. It had an impact on receptors which regulate pain, mood or appetite.

I would imagine folks saw the endocannabinoid and incorrectly assumed it was a cannabis based medicine they were testing.

So it was an antidepressant ? One of them isn't going to make by the sound of things.

I pity the "subjects" who are Iii as a result of this trial.

But of course it won't stop the media spouting misinformation about a drug (not really) possibly linked to the demon weed.

It's legal and readily available in newsagents in certain countries. I did it in Canada and it's frightening.

So pharma companys can sell people a crap and dangerous form of something that grows as a plant.

Since the drug trial did not involve any form of cannabinoid your question is pointless.
