Sending beer abroad by post

Anyone have any experience in sending beer/spirits abroad to continental Europe by post?
I'm planning on sending a parcel with few craft beers in it to a friend in Germany but I know you're technically not allowed send liquid via An Post (though I actually sent a bottle of Bushmills before I knew about this rule which arrived safely). Anyone have any suggestions about how to send them? I'm close enough to the border so could try a post office in the North.

You can post through the North, no problem.

DHL can do it but it is very expensive.

Looking to start a beer exchange with a friend in the states. Is DHL the best option?
