    Hello there,

I'm trying to find some work for my mother and was hoping yea could help. She is 60 but very keen to keep busy and earn some money.

She has a degree and masters in philosophy but doesn't have a huge amount of work experience.

Things like the census or vote counting would be ideal - can anyone think of other options along those lines?

    All help is appreciated.

Does she have any work experience?

    If so in what areas?

The census enumerator recruitment has closed, unfortunately. What kind of work does your mother want to do?

Does she have teaching experience? Could she teach in adult education classes?

She doesn't have a huge amount of work experience unfortunately. But she's very sharp and intelligent. She has volunteered teaching English before.

I don't think she would be into that but thanks for the suggestion!
    Librarian?

Interesting. Do you not need to have a specific degree to be a librarian? Would probably be ideal but can't imagine there are many jobs going.

I told her to apply for the census but it closed within four hours. I was raging as it would have been perfect.

she has volunteered teaching English in the past. What qualifications do you need to teach in adult education?

Why not start volunteer in a charity shop to start with, 2 or 3 days a week. Would ease her in the work environment, she would learn to work as part of team also. She would be able to get a reference from there also & from what I gather they are very good to let people go to interviews. As she will be out meeting people she will build up a network too.

    Home care worker.

Presumably she has a lifetime of experience caring for people in your family home. She'd likely to have to supplement this with a few courses. Check the websites of the homecare organsations.

If she has an area she knows a lot about then contacting the adult education colleges or adult education departments in universities and having a chat is a good start. She should familiarise herself with the courses they offer first.

Doing a postgrad diploma in an area she is interested in can open doors to work also, as can volunteering. A friend of mine spends one evening a week teaching adult literacy. He was trained to do it and finds it hugely rewarding.

If she is looking for work, she should talk to everyone about it and be open to opportunities. It is amazing what comes your way when you are actively looking and networking. Good luck.
