Hi all just after a bit of advice, I'm currently serving my time as a refrigeration and air conditioning apprentice I'm in my final year with all my college and exams passed so I only have a few months left to serve until I'm qualified. It was fine at the start but All I'm doing is maintenance and have only done one install in my whole time served to date, I have spoke to my company and have told them but they are having none of it and said "you know we sub out any installs" as well as this they wont send me to do my f-gas and keep avoiding it anytime I bring it up. I'm really worried about when my time is broke and if they decided not to take me back, all I do is maintenance so if I went elsewhere they would expect me to know how to do everything. as a result of this is I'm miserable in work and hate my job, so much so that I want to work doing something else when I'm qualified, I had thought about doing an online it course whilst serving the rest of my time so if I didn't get kept I'd have something in the background, I'd like a job in IT to be honest. Just looking for some opinions and advice please.

First thing I would say is that no matter how horrible things are, finish what you are at - it's only a few months.

Secondly, why do you want to work in IT?

Oh I've every intention of finishing what I am doing but just not sure it's what I want to do for the foreseeable future.

I'd like a job in IT as I'm good with computers and I enjoy using them, I just am thinking life's too short to be in a job you hate doing. And I'm sick of dreading work.

    Absolutely, agree 100%.

What area of IT do you have an interest in?

You will probably have some good experience in the maintenance side of things but it may be a big disadvantage to you not having installation experience especially if you were to leave your current company when you are qualified. Most companies would expect someone who is qualified to be able to do installs. Would it be feasible to leave your current company and finish your apprenticeship with a company that does installs or to pick up some extra work at the weekends with a company that does? Your attitude to your trade may change if you get to do more installation work.

You have lots of options open to you, as others have said finish out your current apprenticeship.

You could even change carrers but still use your experience, for example learn about computer controlled building management systems which would use a/c. The likes of data centres need people to design and run their whole building management system. If you understand it/computer systems all the better as both are linked together.
