Car Keyed

Parked my car yesterday to go into my local barbers. Drove straight home afterwards. This morning I discovered that the drivers side has been keyed from the drivers door back to the rear quarter panel :mad:. It cannot be buffed out with bare metal evident in a few spots. Anybody have any idea how much it will cost to undo the work of some scumbag

Three panels for 150euro.....don't think I'd have much faith in the quality for that price.

Yeah €150 for 3 panels is very low considering all the the prep work involved with water based paints I am mentally preparing myself for somewhere between €650-800.

Most bodyshops would be 4 figures for that.
Goz, you got a great price on getting your Mitsubishi painted IIRC, is that garage still going

If it's going into 4 figure territory I'll have to put it through the insurance.

Depends on if the panels need replacing, and how new the car is. Not forgetting that they'll also probably repray the panels if the ones they got are a different colour to yours.

€150 lol. You might get it done with a set of Crayola crayons for that. I'd say you're looking at 6-700 minimum for a proper professional job.

    Mindless scum behaviour :(

You said you reckon it would cost 100-150, are you guessing that figure on what it cost to respray your FTO?
I would imagine minimum 500. Theres a place down by blackrock dart station in Dublin thats supposed to be reasonable aswell.

No. I have used GVD a good few times on two of my ftos. Last year, I bought a 2003 E200 kompressor for €1600. It was that cheap, because the back bumper was cracked and scuffed. The boot lid was bent and would not open close easily. The crash bar was toast and there was some bending in the boot itself. I supplied a used crash bar and for all the work, I was charged about €100. Yes, €100.

Now, I realise that I get better prices than most people, because I built the guys website and have recommended him loads of times, but everyone comments on the low price and I wouldn't recommend anyone just because they do good prices. They have to do a good job too. I also picked up a headlight from an accord in a scrapyard he had trouble sourcing, but the work I had done on the merc was easily over 10 times the price I paid. I imagine people mentioning that they found gvd using me as a reference will get a slightly better price. I'm known as "the fto guy", but Gary works too :D

Yeah but man you are purely guessing the price of fixing a key job across multiple panels. I guarantee GVD would charge more than you think, in most cases it requires full panels being re sprayed.
Nothing to do with some places being more than others but a keyed car will not be 100 or 150 no matter where you go. ( at least if its done properly)
Its alot easier and cheaper to fix a cracked and scuffed bumper than a key job across multiple panels. The paint has to be matched/blended in some cases or at worst depending multiple panels being sprayed.. Its more noticeable and takes more time and a tow bar takes 10 mins to fit.

Also bolded you are probably getting a 60% discount if not more.

I've become pretty good at guessing the prices, considering the amount of times I have had spray work done and knowing prices that other lads were charged. If the OP takes some pictures and emails them off, he will get a guestimate. I would be surprised if the quote went above the 200 mark, especially if he says where he heard of them.

The very first example of work I had with them was a rear ended silver fto (we all know how hard it is to match silver). The rear quarter panel had scuffing on one side and there was what looked like a knife wound on the other side of the quarter panel. The bumper was completely out of shape and the bootlid and boot were damaged. The front bumper was a pre-facelift one, so I supplied a facelift bumper, which was in rough shape (needed fibreglass work) and the whole job cost €370. This was before I knew the owner and was the very first time I met him. He made a house call to assess the damage and give a price. I live on the opposite side of the city. That's what I call looking after your customer.

I also want to point out that the website build was done as payment for work done on a car, separate to the pricing I am mentioning above.

I know a couple of lads on here have used them and have been very happy with the price and work. Maybe do a search, rather than take my word for it.

Here is the price list. Says €130 for a door to be sprayed. When extra parts are getting done, the price is negotiated. I'm perhaps being optimistic with a sub 200 price...but you don't know until you ask. I hope the op gets it sorted for an affordable price either way. It's a scummy thing to key a car.

Horrible thing to happen to the OP.

Same thing happened to a friend of mine a few days after buying a new BMW, why instead of admiring a nice car like most of us do, do these scumbags feel they have to damage someone's property.

GF's Golf got keyed again across 2 doors, only had her resprayed last November. Last time it was keyed it was all 4 panels costing €600 for respray. Hoping this time it'll be €400

Sorry to hear that there's some scumbags out there. No one has any respect for others property anymore.

Was going to try to wet sand it out using a bit of 3000grit sand paper. Know it won't fix it permanently but might lessen it a bit

What about a professional tip up job? I got one done before. It was much better then I thought it would be. Only from certain angles you could see where the work was done but was pretty decent looking all the same.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 866 ✭✭✭SgtBob

Had the same happen to me a few years ago, it was my 1st brand new car and only had it two weeks. Anyone who does this is an effin scumbucket. Front passenger door all the way to rear quarter panel. Cost me €800 to get the two doors and the quarter panel resprayed with the main dealer I bought it from.

For the cost of compounding and buffering I'd prefer to just get her resprayed. What a balls
