Noise when starting

I'm getting a scraping noise for a second or 2 while turning the key to start up my car. I'll take it to the garage on Monday but in the meantime, any idea what it could be?

    Does it struggle to start?

Is it just as you release the key?

If it is, it sounds like the starter pinion struggling or failing to immediately disengage with the flywheel.

Seems to be common on 1.4 vws?

    Sticky bendix?

No it's not struggling to start. Not like a flat battery or similar.

Yes it seems to be when releasing the key. Then it's fine.

It's not a VW. It's an 05 Focus with a little over 100,000km. It was serviced and NCT last summer.

    Is it a diesel?

The diesels (at least 1.8 TDCI) have issues with bits of dual mass flywheel crap falling into it making the bendix gear sticky. Spraying some WD-40 and lubing it fixes it :)

    It's petrol.
I'm hoping a bit of lubricant is all it needs and it's nothing costly as I was planning to investigate upgrading over the next few weeks!!

Yeah as long as it starts the car fine then lubricant should be enough.

When I was doing mine I sprayed some WD40 at the bendix and moved it in and out with a screw driver.

When I tapped the starter bits of dust were falling out. Then I lubed it up with some grease and it has been fine now since November.

It needs a new starter motor €320.
