You'll do well to find one with low hours as anyone I seen what bought them tended to work them

Don't know where you're located, but try D&E McHugh in Longford or Crossdoney Tractors in Cavan.

I'm in the south east but I don't mind travelling. I've seen most of the ones advertised on websites etc just wondering if there was anyone thinking of selling up.

Try giving Donal Cronin a phone call. http://www.cmsl.ie/.
The website is rarely up to date so he could have one to suit or coming in.

will be very hard to find one id say with low hours. sure there pushing on now too. newest would still be 12 years old and if that was doing 500 hours a year, that's 6000 hours straight away.

Its hard to find any 6 cylinder with low hours on it these days.

Bought a tractor off him a few years ago. Tough negotiator but good tractors and after sales service in fairness to him

Thanks for the replies I've seen that one in leacys. Have seen a few going to call some lads tomorrow.

Tried all of the above dealers and suggestions nobody seems to have anything suitable.

Anyone else know any dealers etc?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 65 ✭✭fanmanad

Try slemish tractors in Co Antrim. He always has a good selection of New Hollands

It was funny to see James Alexander sending three New Hollands in a container to Thailand on Rare Breed last night. Has anyone ever bought a tractor off him?

Sorry can't post link or pics.

Try Agriaffaires.com. You can knock quoted prices by €2-5k.

I've been on agriaffaires there's a couple on it but the exchange rate isn't great to be buying in England I think.

A lot of tidy uk machines on the .co.uk site too. I always heard French machines are a bit pricier or is that still the case with the exchange rate?

About .75 today, not bad considering it was .69 a while back. Will it go up or down is anyone's guess though....

Some French farmers keep their tractors in better order than their homes. Some can be quite old and have low hours.

Due to the scarcity of Agri contractors, farmers here need to have a lot more kit than in Ireland eg a SP silage contractor will have only the harvester, no trailers, mowers etc. therefore the farmer needs to have his own kit.

Irish farmers are spoiled with contractors that are willing to subsidize them...

Considering that the price of diesel has fallen from a historic peak, yet the price of first cut is still €125 - €130 per acre.... I don't think the contractors are quite as badly off as they make out! ;)

Silage harvester (SP) is €500/hr + vat here.

Have repairs, wages, repayments etc fallen by half?

They certainly provide a damn good service for feck all...

At 10 acres an hour, it €1250 - €1300 per hour for the whole outfit which is approx 1000 excl vat. I'd say you'd have a nice few bob left over from the other 500 if you go looking to hire a few trailers, loader and mower by the hour?

Have you tried many New Holland dealers? There are 4 in Cork alone that I can think of, off the top of my head.

Just checked the calculator. It seems fine to me. Perhaps I didn't explain the calculation in simple enough terms for you!

Ireland : €125 per acre is €1250 per hour at an output of 10 acres per hour, which is a little over €1000 per hour + vat

France : €500 +vat per hour for the SP. You've 500 + vat left in your pocket to put towards the trailers, loader, mower before your costs exceed the costs in Ireland. Don't know what the costs of these are in France, but you should have change left over in Ireland.

But either way, your claim that Irish contractors are working for 'feck all' is false in my opinion, when their charges are on par with those in France.

    OK.
    Price in...
    4 trailers (need 5)
    1 tedder (probably need 2)
    1 rake (probably need 2)
    1 large industrial loader
    2 mowers
    1 maize header
    9 tractors
    +10 drivers

While you're at it throw in an wage for yourself + tools + transport for staff/diesel etc

    :)

You could argue the toss about the breakdown of machines in the crew but not the overall numbers. I'd be saying you're getting rode fairly hard on the price of the sp harvested. Getting a wagon plus 200hp tractor for €120/hr plus vat. On an output basis £500/hr is high. My man can't be doing to badly on his price as he's talking about a new wagon and having his current one as backup or for bigger jobs or longer draws.

They also do a good bit of groundwork and have a rep for doing excellent but high price work. Point being he ain't subbing anything as he always has his figures done.

You've obviously no interest in a like for like comparison so we'll just leave it there.

But just FYI, €125 gets you mow, SP, 3-4 trailers and loader. Tedders, rakes, maize headers:confused: would all be extra

Then scrap the tedder, rake and maize header, (and two tractors and drivers).

Now you show me the figures on how you would make a tidy return?

    I've a t-shirt somewhere...

looks like air suspension on the cab. Have to factor in price of a pick-up hitch as well.

Round here, i think silage cutting is at best a break even exercise for most contractors. Or a vanity project. To my way of thinking, most are afraid of losing out on a farmers custom for slurry and hedgecutting if they dont offer silage as well.

Id say they are making some money out of it but if a bad year comes around or they get a bad breakdown, the profit can disappear fairly fast.
Does anyone else notice that a lot of contractors arent changing their machines as often as they used to .
Big contractor near us is running the same 2 big Ms and 3 class harvestors for a good few years now

    +1
. With silage harvesting at €125/acre there is no scope to reinvest into newer machines.

You hire out tractors and drivers to neighbours for €50 an hour, does that include diesel??
