I was in the same boat last year and ended up getting the Ksyrium SLR. Iirc the rear wheels are the same and the r-sys has carbon spokes in the front wheel as opposed to the Ksyrium. The weight difference was little and if I crashed i was of the opinion that the front wheel with ordinary spokes can be repaired/straightened locally. In saying that I've used the wheels 3 times in 12 months as spares only! Happy shopping

I have the R sys wheels. They were standard on the Canyon, that I bought last year. They are light and strong. I crashed in a league race in Dundalk last May. I was forced to try and ride over a rider, who was on the ground. I hit him at about 45 KPH. The front wheel suffered absolutely no damage. It remained and still remains perfectly true.( I wish, I could say the same about my body)
The noise, when braking, can be very annoying.
If I had to choose between the two sets of wheels, I would go for whichever set was cheaper. There seems to be very little to choose between them. Rear wheels seem identical. Both have same braking surface. R sys are about 30 grammes lighter. I wouldn't worry about the carbon spokes, They are very sturdy.

I have both. Probably the Ksyriums edge it for me. Neither are particularly special.

Don't mind the wheels, what happened the poor sod on the ground??? Metal usually less brittle than skin and bone! :-o

I never found out. I was quite badly injured. Bruised brain, concussion, broken ribs, bruising on my lungs, and a complicated break of my collarbone, which involved titanium plate and self tapping screws.
I also never found out, who the stupid f#!k was, who brought down the guy in front of me.

Jaysus. What comes after first world? Premier-life?
1200+ wheels are a special addition to most peoples lives I would venture. :pac:

I presume these are the "exalith" black coated rim clinchers in both cases? - Great looking wheels both. Though, and I don't claim to fully understand Mavic's complicated enough hierarchy, I think I'm right when I say that the R-sys is one rung higher up? So if they're the same price they might be the ones to go for?

I agree 1200 alot of money for wheels imo makes me wonder for a set of elites at half the price be just as affective?

To be honest yeah. Maybe it's a function of getting older, but I'm increasingly leaning toward the "5 sets of aksiums" for the same price, point of view!

It's a bit of a dilemma - spend a lot on wheels for a (relatively) marginal benefit, or get something good in the low/mid-range and not have to worry too much about them. I'm in a similar position and still haven't spent money I had put aside. I'm sticking with my Zondas ..... :)

Lots of good value in Campag wheels at present.

Are the Mavics really that much of an upgrade? Sure, they look nice, but that's a lot of cash......wouldn't you get two weeks cycling in the Alps on your ZOndas for that?

Towards the end of last season getting a buckle fixed on a Krysium involved an entire new set of spokes (nipples locked on a few of the old ones and easiest thing for bike shop was to cut them all and rebuild). Around the same time a pothole on a set of deep section resulted in a cracked rim (and useless wheel).

After this decided to go cheap with regard to good wheels so zondas and

are my good wheels now. At least they're light and spin well.

If that was the bang I heard on the Enniscorthy - New Ross stretch it sounded horrible. Didn't look around of course to check it out

Zondas or fulcrum 3s are brilliant wheels, I think pound for pound there the best wheels u can get for your money. Ive raced on zondas and there great. 300 euro is enough to spend on wheels in this country with our rubbish roads in my opinion. I know RAS racers that wouldn't spend more than 800 euro on race wheels. I kinda agree with them.
Those superstar components wheels are top notch too. Buddy of mine swears by them and reckons mavic aren't the wheels they were a few years ago
