Charity - used but still OK gear?

Does anyone know of a charity who might take old, but still OK (ie better than none) sailing/wet gear?

I have stuff piling up in my house, and I'm sure I heard years ago of a charity that took wet gear and such, and gave it to sailors who pitched up in Dublin Port with basically nothing.

Despite googling, I can't figure out who that might be, and while I'll give the stuff to regular charities for sale if I can't find them, I'd prefer the gear to go directly to sailors if I can.

    Anyone???

Maybe the sea scouts or I'm sure any sailing club would like them to hand out to new members to use.

Mmm, not sure I'd want this stuff if I was starting out in sailing :D

I think the name of the charity was Stella Maris - I went looking for it at the time, and there's a building near Busaras with the name on it but I could never find it open, or ever find a contact for it.

Whoever told me about it said that ships often turn up in Dublin Port and sometimes are here for months over disupted payments (or whatever), and the sailors have almost literally nothing - the way it was put to me is they're only a bit short of being slaves.

Anyway, we'll see if anyone else knows what I'm on about, and I'll consider the likes of sea scouts if I can't find any other good home for the stuff.

    Thanks though :D

Aha, should have done some more googling before starting a thread :o

    https://www.seafarerswelfare.org/seafarers-centre-directory/ireland/dublin/stella-maris-seafarers-club-dublin

Found this, and have emailed the contact listed to see if it's the place I'm thinking of.

I'll post back here if it is - it might suit others out there as part of a new year's resolution clearout to get rid of some stuff, rather than clogging up landfill - do your good deed for the year sort of thing :)

OK, today I offloaded a sackful of old wet gear, some other non-saiing-specific wet gear, old boots (sailing and hiking) to Stella Maris, who seemed very grateful for them all.

I'm sure lots of other sailors/boaters have similar piles of gear that has been replaced by newer stuff - and I'm equally sure that Stella Maris and some badly equipped sailors would be very glad of them

They seem to keep themselves very deliberately low-key, so I don't particularly want to broadcast their details over t'internet.... anyone can google them like I did, or feel free to PM me and I can put you in touch, or get in touch on your behalf.

My sailing cupboard looks all the better for the newly acquired space, and it's one good deed done for the new year. :)

Bit late, sorry, but there's a bin in RIYC for this. :)

Ah feck's sake, is there really? I never saw it in all my times there! Whereabouts?

Anyway, if I can get word of the charity out there to a few more people, it's all good.....

On thinking about it, it's in the gents locker room, may not have an equivalent in the ladies - that would explain it.. :)
