Android tablet setup for kids

Looking for useful suggestions on setting up and restricting Android tablets for kids.
Keeping in mind many kids tend to be far more clever, creative and informed/lucky than the clunky and not too versatile solutions bolted on to most adult oriented os's
Looked at this over the years with pcs and iPads but it's obviously low priority for most and poorly thought out and implemented when it is.

Currently being frustrated by the fairly useless offerings on a samsung tab4
Comes with its own proprietary KidsZone (has its own crappsstore which is a bit too dumbed down to appeal to most older kids)

Restricted profile in android 4.3 onwards might be a good option if it wasn't hobbled by the fact apps have to opt in and many simply won't work in restricted profile. Little point when you then have to allow them use the unrestricted profile. And the above mentioned KidsZone is one culprit. Some nonsense re security risk sharing gallery items - Well then DONT duh.

Anyone tried out funamo , kidoz , kidsplace etc.?

Might be better off looking at app lockers .
Never thought I'd be envying permissions and profiles but Bill had us all spoiled.
