So, I've lived in the UK for 4 years. I've recently been sent to China on a 6-9 month secondment, which coincided with the end of my lease. So I sold my car (needed to change sooner or later anyway) and put all my stuff in storage. So I technically have no UK address at the moment but am still very much employed with a UK company, UK bank accounts, paid via UK, etc.

Strongly considering returning to Ireland in 2016, but need to plan properly. Visiting friends in England in Feb, was gonna buy something like a £3-4k diesel Ford Focus, register it in my name at my most recent UK address, insure it in my name, get friends to mind it for 6 months while in China. Can get friend to pick up V5C from my old place etc.

Any chance of being stung by customs if I move home around September/October? Similar cars seem to sell for €8-9k in Ireland which is utter insanity. Just seems ridiculous that I could potentially have to pay it even though I have lived away for so long now.

Anyone any similar experiences? Thanks :)

Hardly worth it for that price of car, by the time you've jumped through all the hoops and the restrictions on selling it you'd probably buy a focus here for the same money as sterling is so strong.
With more valuable and desirable cars it's probably worth it.

I see what you're saying, value to be had potentially with strong pound at the moment, but VRT calculator is telling me I'd be liable for €1500 VRT on the Focus I was just looking at. :-/ If I can avoid that for the sake of a couple of hundred quid on insurance, I will.

I know it's a constant topic on here but VRT grrrrr.

For the VRT exemption you must show you've been using the car for 6 months, not simply have ownership. I'm not sure Revenue will accept you qualify considering you wouldn't have even been in the same continent as the car for that time. I expect you'd need to stay and use the car in the UK for 6 months after you return from China.

To bring in a 08/09 focus VRT is only 1k so still well worth bringing one in. Ill be doing it soon myself. 5.5k euro should clear one with a years tax and tested.
