It was 10 years ago this week that Ronan Collins took over midday on Radio 1, having previously occupied the 3/5 slot. Is it time for a change ?

The next step would be retirement. But that doesnt exist within the hallowed walls halls and canteen of montrose

He's currently 63 , it'll be another year and a bit before he's at retirement age.

take out the news, adverts, liveline previews etc and he's prob on air less than 40 min. You could just play one song from The Orb and it would last longer.

I think he fills a good niche, not to everyone's taste but a lot of people like the relaxed blend of music at that time of the day.

In my opinion the programme should be extended to at least 90 minutes and drop Ryan Tubridys show completely. This is not bandwagon jumping against RT but the show is all over the place. His interviews are really poor and he fires questions at interviewees without listening to the answers or drawing anything out. If you doubt me just listen to yesterdays show. Also, no consistency or theme to the topics - just whatever can be thought up.

This is after Morning Ireland in which sometimes they are very tight for time.

I think that Morning Ireland should be extended to 9:30am followed by SOR to 11:30am then followed by Ronan Collins show until 1pm.

He's programme is not my cup of tea but his listenership figures are impressive (if I remember correctly)

The listenership is so impressive because the hour he does is essentially the only musical offering on the station between 7 am and when John Creedon starts, otherwise its just talk, talk, talk. the demographic who listen to Radio 1 clearly love the musical interlude and I agree the show could be longer. In fact I'd go so far as to suggest ditching Darcy completely and substitute his 90 minutes with a music show before the drive time show, that way you have two music shows in a 12 hour timeframe which I dont think is asking too much.

It used to be like that when Creedon was on daytime but they decided they needed more talk to compete with Newstalk.

I read an interview with him a few months back and he said he's a contractor so retirement at 65 may not be compulsory. I enjoyed his show when he was on from 3.30-5 in the afternoons, so would welcome him replacing Darcy but realistically that will never happen. In the early 80s he was on from 12 noon to 1.30. News was at 1.30 and Marian Finucane was on from 2.
