Advice required: Difference in 01 VW Golf 1.9TDI 90BHP V 16 Skoda Octavia 1.6 TDI 110

    Hi.

I am seeking some small advice here.

I am considering in purchasing a new Skoda Octavia 1.6 TDI 110 BHP model.

My current model is a 2001 Volkswagen Golf 1.9 TDI 90 BHP. To be honest there is still a good 'kick' off it in terms of acceleration to this date with well over 250,000 miles on the clock.

Anyway, my query is would I notice a different in terms of performance (ie. acceleration), giving that I'm obviously decreasing the engine size, but that I am increasing the BHP and taking into account that it would be a new vehicle (if this makes any difference) ?

    Thanks.

Power delivery on both cars is going to be different, the old 1.9 TDi normally has a burst of power whereas the newer 1.6 TDi would be more in line with other modern diesel engines in that power delivery is more linear across the rev range. The 1.6 will feel smoother and more refined too.

    Hi Bazza,

    Thanks for the clarification.

While naturally the MPG will depend on how one drives the vehicle, I am gathering as it is a newer vehicle I will get a much better return on fuel efficiency ?

I was getting between 30-45 on the Golf and it was good on a 1/2 tank in terms of refills. I'm of the understanding I may get up to 74MPG, however I would envisage to be honest with some half decent conservative driving, I would get around the 55-60MPG mark.

These are of course my assumptions, however do you think that the difference in it being a lower engine size and it being a newer vehicle that the difference will be quite noticeable ?

I'd imagine fuel consumption would be similar on both, the Octavia is a bit bigger than your Golf but lighter and will have stop/start trickery with a 6 speed gearbox.

Ive use of a 110bhp Octavia and they are a v.nice drive - having driven the 90bhp Golfs I can confirm they are much nicer in everyday, much faster and smoother and quieter but the economy is also better too, it really is a miser and 60 mpg is possible driving long distance at 100kmph.

The only gripe I have is that they still have a 5 speed gearbox and depending on the rev's it can feel overheard if you change up at low rev's, where as the 6 speed in the 1.6 Passat or Superb matches the engine a lot better

Overall it will feel like a million miles better than the Golf
