Quick question about eyesight

    Just a very quick question.
I wear glasses to see things that are far away. I'm technically not allowed drive a car without them.
I've lost my prescription so can't compare it to the regs. How likely is my eyesight going to be prohibitive to me getting a licence? Either private or commercial.
    Laser surgery?
    Thanks

I don't know the exact requirements, but here is a list of the aero medical examiners in Ireland. Give your nearest one a call and get a professional opinion.

I have a class 1 medical and like you I am short-sighted (can't see things far away). As long as you don't have any other issues with your eye health and you can correct your vision sufficiently with glasses or contact lenses then your prescription is unlikely to be a problem.
Go for an eye test in specsavers. It's only €15. That way you'll know exactly what your prescription is and whether there are any other issues you need to know about.
Can't comment on Laser Eye Surgery as I don't know anything about it!

if it's not too bad, you can get a restricted medical - basically it means you're only legal to fly if you have two pairs of glasses with you (or lenses). It's not a problem and you can go and get PPL/CPL.. however I've noticed that some airlines are very specific in their recruitment indicating that applicants should have unrestricted Class 1 medical.

I'm not entirely sure a requirement to carry a spare set of spectacles while operating would count as a restricted medical affecting your employment chances.

When airlines look for crew with unrestricted medicals it's aimed more at medical conditions that could pose a problem, such as a heart condition that required you to always be paired with other pilots who have no restrictions.

My class 1 medical stated that I was subjected to additional eye exams and had to have two pairs of glasses with me at all times, I failed the initial class 1 due to my eye sight and the only option was to get glasses from memory you must be able to read the second last line on the Snelling scale,And that is just one part of the eye examination.
The medical was a real eye opener for me at the time as I was fit had done loads of previous medicals including eye sight lung capacity etc, aAd passed then without any issues only for my eye sight on the class 1.

I've had the restriction to carry a spare pair if glasses for distance vision since I got my first Class 1 medical 17 years ago. I wear contact lenses when flying with a - 2.50 and - 2.25 diopter correction.

The old limit used to be +/- 3.00 for the initial, and then +/- 5.00 after that. It might have changed now, and each case seems to be looked at individually.
